Did you know that lake and river health is reliant on the shoreline?
Natural shorelines contain a mixture of native flowers, shrubs, grasses, and trees.

These are important habitats that support the health of our waters by:
🌳Creating habitat for wildlife in the water and on land
🧽Filtering polluted runoff
🌱Stabilizes soil and decreases erosion
💧Reduces flooding risk
🪻Increases aesthetics and privacy
🌿The native vegetation along shorelines helps trap and filter sediment and debris from runoff and allows water to soak into the soil instead of running into the water. 🛶Aquatic vegetation helps absorb wave action from boats and wind.

Taking care of our shorelines means healthier, more beautiful lakes and rivers.

You may be familiar with terrestrial invasives that live on the land, but do you know about the invasive species that live in the water?

These are called Aquatic Invasive Species, and can range from plants, animals, or pathogens that come from other areas of the world, or even other countries.

❓How do they get here?
Invasive species are primarily spread by human activity that involves going from one waterbody to another with attached plant fragments, larvae, or seeds.

🧐What are a few examples?
Rusty Crayfish, Zebra Mussel, Eurasian Watermilfoil, Purple Loosestrife, and Curly Leaf-Pondweed are the more commonly found species around Wisconsin.

To learn more about aquatic invasive species, contact us or join our Project RED or Snapshot Day Trainings in the summer.-
