In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, Deputy Vigil shares what her heritage means to her: "I take great pride in being Hispanic, not only during Hispanic Heritage Month, but every day. I take pride in where I come from, the sacrifices that were made for me, and the values my mother taught me: strength, resilience, hard work, compassion, and the belief that dreaming big is possible. Coming to the United States as an immigrant child and not knowing the language shaped who I am today. Being fluent in Spanish has allowed me to stay connected to my roots, my culture, and my people, while also giving me the opportunity to help others. Working in law enforcement has been one of the greatest opportunities in my life because it allows me to serve and remain connected to the Hispanic community. I’m proud to use my voice, my culture, and my ability to communicate in Spanish to help those who may need it. This month, I celebrate where I come from, the sacrifices that came before me, and the responsibility I must carry those values forward. I am proud of my heritage, proud of my roots, and proud to serve my community"

They are learning ways to elevate community engagement and provide safety resources to the public.

San Diego Crime Stoppers and investigators from the San Diego Sexual Assault Felony Enforcement (SAFE) Task Force are asking for the public’s help in locating Sexually Violent Predator Merle Wakefield (DOB: 04/12/1957) who is wanted for failing to register as a s*x offender.

A reward is being offered for information that leads to his arrest.

On September 25, 2026, around 3:30 a.m., Wakefield's GPS device alerted to "Tamper Mode" while working in Rancho Bernardo. Wakefield is supervised by Liberty Healthcare (LHC) as part of the State's Conditional Release Program. LHC responded to the scene and discovered that Wakefield's GPS device had been removed and Wakefield was no longer at the location. LHC notified the San Diego County Sheriff's Office and the San Diego Police Department.

On October 2, 2026, a felony warrant was issued for Wakefield's arrest. He is wanted for failure to register as a s*x offender.

Additionally, Wakefield is currently wanted for violating the terms of his conditional release. He was convicted in 1980 and 1991 of lewd or lascivious acts with a child under 14-years-old and r**e by force. Wakefield has been on conditional release since November 2024.

If you see Wakefield, DO NOT APPROACH OR CONTACT HIM. Contact your local law enforcement agency or call 9-1-1.

Wakefield stands 5'10" tall and weighs 230 pounds. He is bald and has brown eyes.

Anyone with information on Wakefield's whereabouts is asked to call the SAFE Task Force at (858) 868-3200 or the Crime Stoppers anonymous tip line at (888) 580-8477.

San Diego County Crime Stoppers is offering up to a $1,000 reward to anyone with information that leads to an arrest in this case.

The San Diego County Sheriff's Office respectfully announces the passing of Tess, a distinguished and beloved member of our Volunteer Mounted Patrol Unit. For eleven years, Tess faithfully served alongside her partner and rider, Barbara Wiener, contributing to the unit's mission and public service efforts with unwavering reliability and grace.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to Barb and express our sincere gratitude for the years of dedication, companionship, and service that Tess provided.
