Capital One is a shining example of how individuals and organizations can change students’ lives by supporting and volunteering for our Imagining Your Future program. Capital One employees have been mentors and workshop volunteers. Because of that, Harraseeket was invited to participate in Capital One’s pro bono program, with twelve Capital One employees working closely with the team to help spread Imagining Your Future to new communities.

Here’s what Capital One employees who worked with us said:

“As a [Northern Virginia high school] alumni… being able to support Harraseeket and my community was incredibly rewarding. Such a full circle moment!”
“Helping others is important to me, so the mission to empower students was most resonant with me! I’m happy I could contribute.”
“It feels good to be able to apply my skills to such a deserving group. I really appreciate the opportunity to get to work with an awesome team while being a part of this project!”

THANK YOU Capital One!

One of our favorite ways of connecting our students to our community volunteers is through “informational interviews,” to learn stories about their career and life experiences.

While these are “career pathways” stories, we also encourage the human interest stories – with all the good and bad decisions, and the bumps, bruises, successes, disappointments and joys that come with life.

Last month, we had 41 students divided into rotating small groups for story-telling sessions with 11 volunteers including a former college basketball coach, the owner of a construction business, a ground service technician at Dulles Airport, and a nonprofit executive.

“It’s a great feeling when I see a bit of a spark in a student’s eyes when they discover something new about themselves.” This message is what drives our Imagining Your Future (IYF) volunteer, Audrey.

Audrey volunteers with Imagining Your Future because she believes every student deserves a support system to help them imagine their future. From moderating career panels to working one-on-one with students during workshops, Audrey helps create a space where students feel comfortable, supported, and encouraged to explore new possibilities.

We are so grateful for Audrey and the many ways she supports students as they imagine their futures.

During our College Partnership Program’s career panellist event, “Knowing and Using Your Strengths and Interests,” a geologist shared his insights on overcoming any struggles that may come your way, and the importance of taking advantage of resources available to you.

At Harraseeket, we strive to gain insights from a varied group of people to diversify our students’ perspectives.
From our College Partnership Program’s career panelist event, “Knowing and Using Your Strengths and Interests,” which featured a former journalist sharing her words of wisdom on being a lifelong learner by encouraging students to “try something new to find out what your heart is wanting.”

If you would like to help more students imagine their future by becoming an event panelist or volunteering for students in the Herndon/McLean/Arlington, VA area, please let us know by filling out this form: https://harraseeket.app.neoncrm.com/forms/contact-us.

Our Imagining Your Future (IYF) Program works with the rule of 3: we aim to guide students through a trek of exploration, learning, and imagination. This trek is divided into 3 phases: workshops and exercises to learn WHO you are, exploration into WHAT you imagine, and a focus on HOW to achieve your imagination.

Pictured below is our January 16 event, where volunteers (“guides”) worked with students whose parents didn’t attend college, in small groups to identify students’ values, strengths, and interests so they could discover WHO they are.

Whether you want to make an impact by volunteering with the future generation, or simply have wisdom to share with students in the Herndon/McLean/Arlington, VA area, please let us know by filling out this form: https://harraseeket.app.neoncrm.com/forms/contact-us!

The Harraseeket team regularly hears stories about mentors who changed young people’s lives -- such as at this week's holiday lunch, pictured below. When the stories are shared, listener reactions often include words like “gobsmacked”, “wonderful,” “inspiring,” and “incredible.”

Yet, these stories are not unusual or extraordinary. They are an effect of when a nonjudgmental adult takes a few minutes to help a young person feel like they matter, that they are loved.

Some tell us they waited years, even decades, to realize they were mentored, and then thank their mentor. Maybe you’ve experienced someone telling you that you changed their lives simply by listening and caring about them.

January is National Mentoring Month. We at Harraseeket encourage you not to wait to thank people who listened, who cared, who mentored you. A phone call, an email, a visit. They’ll be gobsmacked.

And please tell us you’re ready to make new stories, and get involved in our Imagining Your Future movement.
