Yesterday, Higher Horizons had the pleasure of welcoming Mason District Supervisor, Andres Jiminez and staff to our BXR center! He also took the time to visit our Harmony preschool classroom (Ms. Michelle and Ms. Maria’s class) to read to the children. As always, our young scholars were full of questions and excitement about the new visitor to their classroom!

Thank you, Mr. Jiminez! We look forward to your continued support and interest in the children, families, and communities we serve.

Fairfax County’s Child Abuse Prevention efforts seek to Build Stronger Families that can provide safe and healthy childhoods and lead to creating a strong, thriving community.

This year, our theme for National Child Abuse Prevention Month is Family Matters. There are all kinds of families, but one thing is universal. Families make a vast difference in their children’s lives. The values learned in a loving family provide the guidance a child needs to make life’s tough decisions. We encourage parents and caregivers to explore fun ways to share their family history and values to help provide children with a sense of direction, connection, and belonging.

Over 259,000 children live in Fairfax County; and in FY 2023, more than 3,700 of those children were involved with Child Protective Services. Child abuse and neglect cuts across all demographic areas and impacts our entire community. Child abuse and neglect affects us all.

Fairfax County continues to be a community that is absolutely dedicated to maintaining the safety of children and to providing the appropriate support to parents to keep families healthy.

If something doesn’t look safe, sound safe, or feel safe – Report it!
If a child is in immediate danger or is under the age of 7 and unsupervised, please call 911 for an immediate response.

If you suspect child abuse or neglect, do not hesitate to call the Fairfax County Child Protective Services (CPS) Hotline at 703-324-7400. Our CPS HOTLINE is a HELP Line!

April is Autism Awareness Month!

It is a time to increase understanding and acceptance of those with autism. It is also a time to acknowledge the importance of all unique and diverse ways of thinking and abilities.

At Higher Horizons we have made it a priority to make inclusion, acceptance, and celebration of diversity our culture! Our youngest learners with autism and other uniqueness's depend on us to normalize inclusive practices that are responsive to their individual needs and abilities. This commitment is reflected in the work we do daily, and is also one of our strategic “Pillars of Program Success” posted on our hallway walls as a visual reminder of this priority.

In the wonderful words of Temple Grandin (autistic scientist), “The world needs all kinds of minds”

Higher Horizons Head Start

Higher Horizons Head Start, a private, non-profit organization established in 1963, is a delegate agency of the Fairfax Office for Children. In December 2009, Higher Horizons Day Care Center became a grantee for Early Head Start and was awarded funding through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The agency serves 300 low-income children and families in the Bailey’s Crossroads and Falls Church communities of Fairfax County, Virginia in a fully integrated system of services. Higher Horizons is licensed by the Virginia State Department of Social Services. We serve expectant parents, infants, toddlers, preschoolers and their families. We have highly qualified, caring staff members who receive on-going training and education. Higher Horizons believes parent and community involvement are the key elements needed to build a quality early childhood program. We are committed to delivering services with pride and excellence.
