CarbonPositive: If We Act Together Now, We Can Change the World

This essay from @architectmag which outlines 3 steps to being zero carbon, and it's not difficult.

According to NIST, #EIFS can reduce carbon emissions by 3-5 times that of other exterior cladding options.

With record setting temperatures in many parts of the United States, buildings have a solution in continuous insulation and EIFS. As the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) reports, an estimated 40 percent of all energy in a building is for heating and cooling, while 39 percent of energy usage is due to account for air leakage through the walls.

According to a National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) study, #EIFS provides a continuous layer of insulation and is 84% more energy efficient than the next best performing cladding.

Back in April, New York Passive House - NYPH announced a list of 65 projects in NYC that were deemed to be "Energy-Efficient Overachievers". One of those projects is the 8-story Houston House, located in the trendy East Village neighborhood.

To achieve this designation from NY Passive House, the building "delivers up to approximately a 90% reduction in heating and cooling demand and up to a 75% reduction in overall primary energy demand." The list is ongoing, and we're sure more EIFS projects will be added soon.

According to the definitions of the International Building Code and ASTM International, an Exterior Insulation and Finish System (EIFS) is a nonload bearing, exterior wall cladding system that consists of an insulation board attached either adhesively or mechanically, or both, to the substrate; an integrally reinforced base coat; and a textured protective finish coat.

EIFS were first introduced in the United States in the late 1960's, and were first used on commercial buildings, and later on homes. EIFS typically consist of the following components:
-A water-resistive barrier (WRB) that covers the substrate
-A drainage plane between the WRB and the insulation board
that is most commonly achieved with vertical ribbons of
adhesive applied over the WRB
-Insulation board typically made of expanded polystyrene (EPS)
which is secured with an adhesive or mechanically to the
substrate
-Glass-fiber reinforcing mesh embedded in the base coat
-A water-resistant base coat that is applied on top of the
insulation to serve as a weather barrier
-A finish coat that typically uses colorfast and crack-resistant
acrylic co-polymer technology.
