Celebrating Women’s Equality - Climbing the ranks in the medical field

Captain Janshay E. Polk has served in the Army since 2003. Polk began her career as an operating room technician before being accepted into the Army Enlisted Commissioning Program. She now holds a Master’s in Nursing administration/leadership. She is currently serving as the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division brigade nurse and acting Brigade Surgeon.

We celebrated the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment, which granted women the right to vote on August 26, 1920. Congratulations COL Chappel!

Congratulations to COL Debra Chappel, our newest inductee into the Honorable Order of Military Medical Merit (O2M3). COL Chappel is a trauma nurse, clinical nurse specialist, and the #MEDCoE Director of Training and Doctrine.

MG Dennis LeMaster, Commanding General of the Medical Center of Excellence, presented COL Chappel with a medallion and certificate for membership into the Order in a small, informal ceremony that allowed for virtual and in-person attendance.

The Order of Military Medical Merit is a unique, private organization founded by the Commanding General of the U.S. Army Health Services Command in April 1982, to recognize excellence and promote fellowship and esprit de corps among Army Medical Department personnel. Membership in the Order denotes distinguished service, which is recognized by the senior leadership of the Army Medical Department.

Throughout a 29-year career in Army Medicine, COL Chappel has consistently made an impact in Army Medicine and patient care. While deployed, she served as one of the first Army Nurse Corps Officers to represent Army Medicine on a patient care team with U.S. Allies, and set a standard of care for traumatically injured patients at the infamous “Baghdad E.R”.

Remembering one of #ArmyMedicine's champions for #WomensEqualityDay:

Blanchfield Army Community Hospital's namesake Col. Florence A. Blanchfield, joined the #USArmy during World War I and the influenza pandemic of 1918. She went on to lead the U.S. Army Nurse Corps during World War II, placing nurses in combat zones because she said that is where their care was most needed to save service members’ lives. In return for their dedication, she championed and obtained equal rank, pay and benefits for nurses while helping pave the way for women to follow.

Former Army nurse, 100, recalls World War II experiences

#USArmy Gen. Mark A. Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, presented World War II veteran Lt. Regina Benson with the Joint Service Achievement Medal. Benson, an Army #Nurse stationed in Japan and Hawaii during the war, served in dangerous conditions and paved the way for women like her to join the military. Benson believes “the United States is the greatest country in the world because of its freedoms and because people can carry out their dreams.” If she could speak to younger generations today, she said she would tell them “to love their country, and remember the price [service members] paid for your freedom. Remain true to your country. We can pursue our dreams and hopes.”
