Flashback Friday to a magical day at the NVFS Head Start Child Development Center! 🎭

Thanks to their grant funding supporting theater arts education outreach in South Arlington, Encore Stage & Studio teaching artists brought their bilingual performance of “Sidewalk Stroll” directly to our students — creating a joyful, hands-on arts experience our children were still acting out on the playground afterward.

As we celebrate Head Start’s 61st birthday this week, we’re grateful for partnerships like this that help bring enriching opportunities to the children and families we serve.

Always Forward, a Rising Act film, follows Ninah, a Congolese refugee and mother, as she builds a new life for her family through NVFS’ Training Futures program, gaining job readiness skills, confidence, and new opportunities along the way. Ninah is portrayed by Christelle Awa, also a Training Futures graduate.

Healthy smiles start early! During National Smile Month, we’re celebrating the impact of oral health education at our Head Start centers.

Thanks to interactive lessons from our community partner BRITESTARS Pediatric Dentistry, children learned proper brushing techniques through songs and hands-on demonstrations. Plus, we’ve already seen a significant increase in routine dental checkups.

“Many people come in thinking that you’re going to change the system. That’s not what we’re here for. We are here to make an impact on one child’s life. If we’re able to do that, you have done enough. You’ve done more than you can think of," said Corina Solorzano, director of NVFS' Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) Program.

Every child deserves someone in their corner. The CASA program is seeking volunteers to support children in Alexandria and Arlington navigating the overwhelming child welfare or juvenile justice system. Advocates help ensure a child’s voice is heard when it matters most.
