The reconstruction of the retaining wall surrounding the courthouse, has certainly attracted a great deal of attention, with many wondering if the wall was to be taken down and removed. Rest assured, the wall is only receiving a much needed face lift as it had settled over the years.
In October 1912, the limestone wall replaced the decorative wrought iron fence which had been in place since the brick courthouse was built in 1873. The wall is 110 years old, making it thirteen years older than the present courthouse.
The limestone came from a quarry south of Falls City belonging to Charles Ebel.
The corner stone, which was located in the southwest corner, includes the names of the seven county "supervisors" in office at the time, the owner of the rock quarry and two additional unreadable names who, one could assume, were responsible for the actual construction of the wall.
The corner stone reads,
