The reconstruction of the retaining wall surrounding the courthouse, has certainly attracted a great deal of attention, with many wondering if the wall was to be taken down and removed. Rest assured, the wall is only receiving a much needed face lift as it had settled over the years.

In October 1912, the limestone wall replaced the decorative wrought iron fence which had been in place since the brick courthouse was built in 1873. The wall is 110 years old, making it thirteen years older than the present courthouse.

The limestone came from a quarry south of Falls City belonging to Charles Ebel.

The corner stone, which was located in the southwest corner, includes the names of the seven county "supervisors" in office at the time, the owner of the rock quarry and two additional unreadable names who, one could assume, were responsible for the actual construction of the wall.

The corner stone reads,

OCT. 1912 COM.
N.CAMPBELL R.A. COUPE
MC. HOOVER C.H. WEAVER
H. NUTZMAN T.R. EDWARDS
M. SHEEHAN ????? GON
CHAS. EBEL J. GOR ?? CE

A photo of the second courthouse taken around 1895-1910. The camera is looking to the northwest. 17th Street is at lower left and Harlan at lower right, both still dirt. Hitching rails line the square. In the corner of the square in the foreground, largely hidden by trees, is where the veterans memorials are today.
