Falls City Volunteer Ambulance Squad We are a volunteer based EMS service that provides ambulance services to the citizens of the Falls City, Rulo, Verdon, Salem, Stella and Shubert areas.

There are excellent emergency medical services. Falls City Volunteer Ambulance Squad was formed in April 1974. There are 28 EMT’s and drivers on the squad. The squad has three ambulances (all with defibrillators). One is equipped with heavy rescue equipment, “Jaws of Life,” generators, etc. Two to three-person crews are on duty 24 hours a day. The squad is dispatched through our semi-automated 911

system. The computerized 911 system even allows any existing medical conditions to be documented in the system and given to medical personnel upon ambulance dispatch. Although squad members are strictly volunteers, the average response is 2.5 to 3 minutes from the time of call until the ambulance is rolling out the door. In addition there is access to a nearby air service that can be contacted and have a helicopter on the scene 20 minutes from the time they are called. They can assist ambulance personnel at the scene or transport a patient directly to a trauma center. Phone: 402.245.4422


We are a BLS (Basic Life Support) ambulance service. Many of our EMT's and drivers work full time jobs in addition to taking ambulance duty. We are your family, neighbors and friends.

As we wrap up EMS Week, we want to take a moment to recognize the heart behind our Falls City Volunteer Ambulance Squad.

Rural EMS is different — our members are your neighbors, coworkers, friends, and family. They work full-time jobs and still answer the call at all hours of the day, night, weekends, holidays, and during some of the most difficult moments in people’s lives. They leave dinner tables, family gatherings, and warm beds to help care for this community they love so deeply.

We are incredibly proud of the dedicated members who make up our valued squad and the compassion they show every single day. If you see one of our EMS members out and about, please take a moment to give them a thank you or a smile. Your support and kindness mean more than you know, and it reminds our volunteers why they continue to serve this amazing community.

The History of EMS Week

In 1974, President Gerald Ford authorized EMS Week to celebrate EMS professionals and the important work they do in our nation's communities. National Emergency Medical Services Week brings together local communities and medical personnel to honor the dedication of those who provide the day-to-day lifesaving services of medicine's frontline. EMS Week is presented by the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) in partnership with the National Associations of Emergency Medical Technicians (NAEMT). Together, NAEMT and ACEP lead annual EMS Week activities. These organizations are working to ensure that the important contributions of EMS professionals in safeguarding the health, safety and well-being of their communities are fully celebrated and recognized.

Congrats Gary

In every small town, there are people who quietly dedicate their lives to serving others—no spotlight needed. In Falls City, that person is Gary Jorn.

Gary’s commitment to his community has spanned decades and worn many hats, all rooted in service.

Many residents know him best for his work with the Falls City Volunteer Ambulance Squad, where he has volunteered as an ambulance driver and played a leadership role. In fact, he has even served as president of the squad, helping guide its mission to provide lifesaving care and transport for local patients.

But Gary didn’t stop there. He also worked as a paramedic and spent time in the emergency room, giving him firsthand experience on the front lines of rural healthcare. Whether responding to a call in the middle of the night or assisting patients during critical moments, Gary has always been someone his community could count on.

His dedication carried over into city leadership as well. Gary serves as the City Administrator, Clerk, Treasurer, Street Superintendent and the Parks Supervisor for Falls City, taking on the responsibility of helping manage and improve the community he’s long called home. In addition, he has contributed to other roles within city operations, continuing to support the town’s growth and day-to-day needs.

What makes Gary truly stand out isn’t just the titles he’s held—it’s the consistency of his service. From emergency response to public administration, his work has always been about helping others and strengthening his community.

As Mabel Morton shared in her nomination, Gary embodies what it means to be a hometown hero: someone who steps up, gives back, and makes a lasting difference without ever asking for recognition.

And in Falls City, that difference has been felt by many.
