249 years ago, bold men and women dared to declare freedom in the face of an empire.

Today, we don't just celebrate fireworks and cookouts. We honor the spirit of courage, sacrifice, and unshakable resolve that built this nation from the ground up.

And may we always remember freedom isn’t free. Let us be grateful for all of the brave men and women who have sacrificed so much to protect our freedoms and the freedoms of others around the world.

Happy Independence Day!

The FEMA Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) in Pendleton County will be closing for the Independence Day Holiday (July 4 through 6). They will then be open for regular business hours Monday through Saturday from 9 AM to 7 PM.

The DRC is located in the Pendleton County Emergency Operations Center at 2275 Hwy 27 N (next to the High School). FEMA representatives at the DRC will explain available assistance programs, how to apply, help connect you to resources for your recovery needs and explain any letters you may have gotten from FEMA. The Small Business Administration is set up at the DRC as well.

If you applied for FEMA assistance after the April severe storms, straight-line winds, flooding, landslides and mudslides, you’ll receive a letter from FEMA in the mail or by email. This is your determination letter.

The letter will explain your application status and how to respond. It is important to read the letter carefully because it will include the amount of any assistance FEMA may provide and information on the appropriate use of disaster assistance funds.

If your letter says you are not currently eligible for assistance, this is not a denial. There are things you can do that may change that decision.

The link below will give you more information on your letter.

[6-25-2025] HEAT ADVISORY EXTENDED… NOW IN EFFECT UNTIL 8 PM FRIDAY

Heat index values in the upper 90s to lower 100s. Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses.

Consecutive days of high heat and humidity can be especially hazardous as warm overnight temperatures will provide little relief.

Drink plenty of fluids, stay in air-conditioned rooms, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Take extra precautions when outside. Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing. Try to limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Take action when you see symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
