On Friday 8/28/26 at 12:09am, the Fanwood Fire Department was dispatched to a residence on Terrill Road for the report of smoke in the structure. Upon arrival, units encountered heavy smoke showing from the residence, and the incident was upgraded to a structure fire.

Fanwood Engine 7, Engine 8, and Ladder 1 responded along with the Scotch Plains and Westfield Fire Departments. Firefighters stretched two attack lines and located a fire in the basement with minor extension to Division 1.

The fire was brought under control within 45 minutes. There were no reported injuries.

On Tuesday, July 28th, the FFD conducted a mask confidence course. This course focused on fireground tactics, movement and operational proficiency. Members used PPE & SCBA while performing these tasks.

The course consisted of a stair climb, weighted pike pulls, hose pull, dummy drag, ladder raise, agility walk with equipment and a timed striking station.

The National Weather Service has placed our area under an Enhanced Risk (Level 3 of 5) for severe thunderstorms this afternoon and evening.

The primary threat will be damaging wind gusts, which could result in downed trees, power lines, and power outages. A few tornadoes are also possible, including the potential for a strong tornado. Additionally, our area is under a flood watch for the potential of flash flooding.

Please make sure you have multiple ways to receive weather warnings throughout the day, avoid any downed power lines, and dial 911 to report emergencies.

After a few very challenging days for our community and first responders, Mother Nature decided to present us with a lighter challenge.

This morning, Fanwood Fire was dispatched for a report of ducklings stuck in a storm drain. Firefighters, with assistance from the Fanwood DPW, Fanwood Police Department, and some friendly neighbors, successfully extricated the ducklings and reunited them with their distraught mother.

All parties declined medical treatment and were released from the scene.

The National Weather Service has placed our area under a "Significant" (Level 4 out of 5) risk for flooding through Tuesday. Please note the following:

1) PSE&G continues to restore power following the recent storm. Borough officials remain in contact with PSE&G and are urging them to complete repairs as quickly as possible. If your power has not yet been restored and your home has a sump pump, please try to **SAFELY** connect it to a generator to help prevent basement flooding.

2) If you are using a generator, never operate it inside a home, garage, basement, or near windows and doors. Generators produce carbon monoxide, which can be deadly.

3) Flooding and standing water can obscure downed power lines. Please use caution and do not walk through floodwaters, as they may become energized by electrical lines that are still down.

4) As is always the case when flooding is expected, do not attempt to drive through flooded roadways. You cannot accurately judge the depth of the water from your vehicle. Turn around, don't drown.

This morning, the Fanwood Fire Department was dispatched to La Grande Avenue for a reported motor vehicle accident.

Upon arrival, crews found a vehicle that had left the roadway and struck two structures before coming to rest on top of a parked car. The driver was evaluated on scene and transported to the hospital for further treatment.

Firefighters stabilized the vehicle, assisted with vehicle removal, and secured the scene while crews worked to mitigate hazards.

In the aftermath of Friday night's severe storm Fanwood Fire Department responded to more than 30 calls for service including a structure fire, multiple trees on homes, several trees / wires down, multiple carbon monoxide incidents caused by generator malfunctions/misuse, and other hazardous conditions. Power restoration and cleanup are ongoing. Please continue exercising caution around downed trees and wires.

⚠️ STORM UPDATE ⚠️

As our community begins cleanup efforts following last night's severe storm, please use caution. Fanwood Fire Department has been responding throughout the night to numerous incidents involving downed trees, downed power lines, and carbon monoxide emergencies related to generator use.

Please keep the following safety tips in mind:

• A significant portion of the borough are without power and there are many downed power lines. Treat ALL downed wires as energized and dangerous. Stay away from them and anything they are touching, including trees, fences, vehicles, and standing water.

• Use generators safely. Generators should NEVER be operated inside a home, garage, basement, crawl space, shed, or near doors, windows, or vents. Carbon monoxide is colorless, odorless, and can be deadly.

• If your carbon monoxide alarm activates, move everyone outside to fresh air immediately and call 911.

• Use caution when clearing storm debris. Watch for hanging limbs, unstable trees, hidden wires, and damaged structures.

• If you encounter a blocked roadway, turn around and seek an alternate route. Do not attempt to drive around barricades, over downed wires or through debris.

Yesterday, the Fanwood Fire Dept. was dispatched to a reported MVA rollover with entrapment. FA-1 (Chief of the department) & Engine-7 responded. Members quickly secured & stabilized the vehicle, extricating the victim. Fortunately there were no serious injuries.
