Picture of the week. Who wouldn’t want these beautiful small daisy-like flowers around? Fleabane (erigeron) is a North American native, an excellent pollinator plant and it's deer resistant! Flowers are pink or white and are 1 inch in diameter. You can find it in bloom now in our Borough Hall gardens. They can bloom all summer long.

Those gray armored bugs you find under your pots aren’t pests… They’re free labor🌿

The pill bug (roly-poly) is technically a crustacean, not an insect. It’s more closely related to a crab than to any common garden bug. Those 14 legs give it away every time.

Here’s what they actually do in your soil:
- Breaks down dead leaves, decaying plant matter, and soil fungi into usable nutrients.
- Releases nitrogen, phosphorus, and humic compounds directly as it digests organic material.
- Improves soil texture and water absorption.

What it does NOT do:
Damage live roots, bite, sting, or harm healthy plants.

How to read what you’re seeing:
A cluster under a pot or in leaf litter means your soil has the right moisture and organic matter — leave them. A pill bug on bone-dry soil is a signal to add compost, not to remove the bug.

The smallest composter in your garden is already on the job!

Photo of the week. A very cute Red Fox kit emerging in the Fanwood Nature Center. Did you know that Red Fox kits are born with a dark gray or brown coat? By 6-8 weeks old the coat starts turning sandy colored to the characteristic red fur.

If you find a turtle crossing the road and want to help it cross safely, use these tips:
🐢 Stay safe. Never put yourself at risk! Make sure that you do not endanger yourself, or others, by walking into traffic.
🐢 When safe to do so, pull your car over and onto the shoulder if possible. Turn on your hazard signals.
🐢 When it's safe to enter the roadway, approach the turtle and pick it up by grabbing its shell with both hands between its front and hind legs. They have strong legs, so hold on!
🐢 It is important that you move the turtle in the direction that it is heading. They are not always headed directly toward water. They will turn around if you put them in the wrong direction, so work with their instincts.
🐢 Place the turtle off the road onto the soft shoulder (dirt or grass).
🐢 If the turtle is injured, contact a permitted wildlife rehabilitator:https://dep.nj.gov/wp-content/uploads/njfw/rehab-list.pdf
