Component Spotlight: The largest control structure for the FM Area Diversion project will hold back the mighty Red River during times of severe flooding. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers St. Paul District has nearly completed construction on the Red River Structure. It took excavating 1.8 million cubic yards, placing 72,000 cubic yards of concrete and drilling 87,000 linear feet of piling to build the structure, which features three 50-by-52.5-foot radial arm gates.

Q. When can I drop my flood insurance?

A. After the FM Diversion project is certified by FEMA. Once construction of the FM Area Diversion Project is completed, FEMA will need to recertify the floodplain. We are working in tandem with FEMA to expedite the process, but it could take until the end of 2030 for the floodplain to be remapped and certified.

Component Spotlight: The Diversion Inlet Structure's gates will open to allow floodwaters into the stormwater diversion channel. The gates are 50-feet wide and 26-feet tall. To build the structure, a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers St. Paul District contractor excavated 264,000 cubic yards of material, installed 55,400 linear feet of steel piling and placed 11,700 cubic yards of concrete.

This massive effort by ASN Constructors included construction on railroad, interstate and county road bridges. We recently marked the milestone with a gathering at the 52nd Avenue West crossing, the last that will open to traffic.
