On October 27, 1970, the body of an unidentified man was found near railroad tracks outside Page, ND. For more than 50 years, he was known only as "Unknown Male"—until now.

Thanks to forensic collaboration, archival research, and a labeled denture recovered during exhumation, the man has been positively identified as William Howard Tate, a WWII veteran.

This extraordinary identification effort was led by the Cass County Coroner’s Office in partnership with Southeast Missouri State University.

Cass County officials are urging residents to take immediate precautions as extreme cold temperatures continue to pose a serious threat to public safety.

Cold Weather Safety Tips:
• Check on others: The elderly, individuals experiencing homelessness, and those without adequate heating are at higher risk. If you or someone you know needs a warm place to stay, contact local shelters or emergency services.
• Limit outdoor exposure: If you must go outside, dress in multiple layers, including a hat, gloves, and an insulated coat.
• Know the warning signs: Frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, causing numbness, discoloration, and a waxy texture. Hypothermia symptoms include confusion, shivering, slurred speech, and exhaustion.
• Use caution with heating sources: Ensure space heaters are used safely and never left unattended. Carbon monoxide poisoning is a risk when using gas or wood-burning appliances indoors.
• Avoid travel if possible: Extreme cold can cause vehicle malfunctions. If travel is necessary, keep an emergency kit with blankets, food, and water in your vehicle.

For more information on cold weather safety and available resources, please visit ready.gov/winter-weather. If you see someone in distress due to the cold, call 911 immediately.
