Most of us hope we’ll never be the person standing nearby when it happens. But if we are, knowing what to do can matter.

“It’s a lonely feeling, when you’re standing in your driveway, watching your home and everything in it burn up. And any time I get to spend with the people experiencing it, to help them feel just a little less alone, and well it’s why I do what I do. And I’ll do it for the rest of my life.”

Across our region, we gathered to honor the Red Cross volunteers who show up in life’s hardest moments.

Jeff Wolsky, our Exceptional Leadership Award recipient for the Eastern North Dakota and Northwest Minnesota Chapter, is one of them, serving on the Disaster Action Team and turning compassion into action when it matters most.

This Memorial Day, we honor the U.S. service members who gave their lives to protect our country. We pause in remembrance and gratitude for their sacrifice.

- Visit a national cemetery to place flags or flowers.
- Pay your respects at a local war memorial.
- Observe the National Moment of Remembrance at 3 p.m. local time with a minute of silence.
- Volunteer to support service members, veterans, and military families in your community.

We had a BLAST at the Touch-a-Truck event in downtown Mandan, North Dakota last weekend. We spread the word about volunteer opportunities to help out with large and small disasters that occur across the country and right in your home town.

Red Cross volunteers are on scene connecting with people displaced from their homes after a 12-unit multi-family fire on 15th Ave. SW in Jamestown, N.D.

The team is working to address immediate needs, including making sure everyone has a safe place to stay, medications replaced and health needs met, as well as emotional support as they navigate these first few hours after the disaster.
