NDSU Archives The NDSU Archives actively seeks out collections in all formats that enhance its holdings on the history of North Dakota and its people.

This also includes the history and people of North Dakota State University. The NDSU Archives collects, preserves and makes accessible unique and rare historical materials that provide resources for the study of North Dakota and the region. The University Archives serves as the institutional memory of NDSU by collecting and making accessible records of enduring historical and administrative value.

Together they promote the use of these materials by the NDSU community, scholars and the public towards the advancement of scholarship.

Last night, as part of the 75th Anniversary celebrations for the Institute for Regional Studies, featured speakers Catherine McMullen and Jamie Parsley discussed the 1957 Fargo Tornado. Catherine’s father was Cal Olson, the Pulitzer Prize Fargo Forum photographer whose negatives are now part of the Institute’s archival collections. Jamie Parsley, Associate Poet Laureate of North Dakota, discussed his NDSU Press book, “Fargo, 1957”.

The NDSU Archives will close at 3:30 on Monday, Sep. 22, so that staff can attend the 2025 Gunlogson Presentations. This presentation is open to the public and we encourage our patrons to join us!

You're invited to the 2025 Gunlogson Presentation: Monday, 9/22/25 from 4-5:30pm at the Anishinaabe Theater in the NDSU Memorial Union. This year the Gunlogson Award winners explore stories of bonanza farms and tenant families, flooding and conservation, in addition to cultural and ecological heritage of grasslands and native plants. Their work reveals how resilience, memory and place continue to shape life on the plains.

Tonight was the launch of the exhibit celebrating the Institute for Regional Studies 75th Birthday. The exhibit highlights the collections and publications of the NDSU Press and the Institute for Regional Studies Archives. As part of event, the Press introduced their latest book, Champagne Times: Lawrence Welk and His American Century, by Lance Richey. Mr. Richey did extensive research on Lawrence Welk using the collections housed in the Archives. You can catch the exhibit at the Memorial Union Gallery until October 8th.
