In this blog, Nexus Family Healing breaks down some of the most common reasons behind aggressive behavior in young children, from difficulty expressing emotions to stress or learned behavior. More importantly, we share practical ways parents and caregivers can respond in the moment and help children learn healthier ways to cope.

Change doesn’t happen overnight, but with patience, consistency, and the right support, kids can learn and grow.

Youth who have experienced foster care know the system in a way no one else can. And their voices matter.

In North Dakota, members of the Youth Advisory Board use their experiences to raise awareness, challenge stigma, and advocate for changes that better support youth in foster care and beyond. From speaking with community leaders to helping shape conversations around policy, they’re working to make sure young people are heard.

Their message is simple: include youth, listen to their experiences, and create space for them to be part of decisions that impact their lives.

In North Dakota, we provide a range of foster care services designed to meet youth where they’re at. From Treatment Foster Care for youth with more complex needs, to the Chafee Program which helps teens and young adults prepare for independence, to Supervised Independent Living for those taking the next step on their own. Each service is focused on creating stability and helping young people move forward.

We’re grateful for the foster parents, families, and professionals who make this work possible every day, and who help create safe, supportive environments where kids can grow.

At Nexus Family Healing, we believe mental health support works best when it’s rooted in community, and school is where children spend much of their day.

Through our School Linked Services, we partner with select schools across North Dakota to provide strength‑based mental health support for children and their caregivers. Our school case managers work closely with students, families, teachers, and support teams to build trusting relationships and create individualized care plans that support the whole child.

When Kattie first connected with Nexus in Fargo, she was overwhelmed and unsure how to move forward. She wanted stability for her two young sons, but the challenges they were facing at home and at school made that feel out of reach.

Through School Linked Services, Kattie and her family were connected to a team that helped bring things into focus. With support from her case manager, therapists, and school partners, they began building routines, strengthening communication, and working toward stability together.

Today, Kattie and her boys are in a very different place, growing, thriving, and moving forward with a renewed sense of confidence and hope.

Stories like this are a reminder that the right support, at the right time, can make a lasting difference for families.
