ITS OFFICIAL!
The Minnesota DNR announced yesterday that Big Stone Lake and all other SD/MN border waters will remain open year round for fishing. In the past, opener for Big Stone Lake was the 3rd weekend in April. The new change will now allow anglers to fish all species all year (excluding sturgeon). For some the tradition of opener will be missed, although most anglers are looking forward to the early season opportunities to catch the male walleyes that run the shorelines during spawn right after ice out. Late ice will also provide opportunities for those that like to chase the late ice walleyes. The limit for walleye on Big Stone Lake is 4 fish and only one of those can be over 20 inches, however we would like to encourage catch and release of all walleyes over 20 inches. The new rule will begin starting March 1, 2019. Also, don't forget to renew your fishing licenses by the same day. Big Stone Lake is a 26 mile lake located on the MN/SD border. The lake is a reservoir and is the headwaters of the Minnesota River. The average depth in the basin is 11-13 feet. Anglers are allowed to use 2 fishing poles each. A Minnesota or South Dakota license allows you to fish the entire lake and off either shore. The lake is known for its excellent walleye and perch fishing and boasts a growing population of largemouth bass, white bass, big bluegills, bullheads, northern pike and a few crappies.
