Authorities: Group attempted to 'jackpot' ATMs in Delaware, Dubuque counties
Telegraph Herald
EARLVILLE, Iowa -- Authorities said a group of four people attempted to “jackpot” ATMs in Delaware and Dubuque counties.
Jose L. Barboza Escorihuela, 29; Winderlys A. Carmeza Madriz, 19; Argenis A. Parz Aular, 35; Leonel A.R. Ramos, 26; all of Chicago, all were arrested at 1:20 a.m. Sunday in Earlville, Iowa, on charges of conspiracy to commit a non-forcible felony.
Court documents state that the group intended to target ATMs in Farley and Dyersville, both of which had been tampered with early Saturday morning.
Documents state that “ATM jackpotting occurs when a suspect gains access to the interior of an ATM by opening the hood door to reach the computer components inside.”
“Suspects then install malware that allows them to manipulate the ATM at a later time to dispense large amounts of cash,” documents state.
The group were traveling in a pair of vehicles that were followed by unmarked units from area law-enforcement agencies. The vehicles bypassed Farley and Dyersville and entered Earlville, where one vehicle circled the area and another stopped near a Community Savings Bank branch, where law enforcement observed an individual opening the hood of the bank’s ATM.
Law enforcement stopped both vehicles and found items associated with ATM tampering, documents state. All four people were apprehended and booked into the Delaware County Jail.
Additional charges are pending
