Burn Ban in Effect — September 5 through September 8

A burn ban is effective immediately for the unincorporated areas of Crawford County and will remain in place until 8:30 AM Tuesday, September 8.

While the Grassland Fire Danger Index is currently moderate, extreme heat and dry conditions can cause fires to burn more intensely and become harder to control. These conditions also place additional stress on firefighters and emergency responders working in already dangerous heat.

This burn ban is being issued for the safety of our communities and responders.

NOTICE🚧: Starting on August 22, this Saturday, to August 26, next Wednesday, the BEACH PLAYGROUND will be closed. We will have a team resurfacing the playground with turf. During this time we ask everyone to stay out of the playground at the beach and give the team space to work. The beach will still be open during this time. 🏖☀

🐍 How many snake species call Kansas home?

Kansas is home to nearly 40 species and subspecies of snakes, and the vast majority are nonvenomous.

Some commonly encountered Kansas snakes include:

🐍 Gartersnakes
🐍 Ratsnakes
🐍 Hog-nosed Snakes
🐍 Kingsnakes

While most snakes are harmless and prefer to avoid people, they play an important role in Kansas ecosystems by helping control rodent populations.

The next time you spot a snake outdoors, take a closer look—from a safe distance, and see if you can identify the species.
