Friday marked the exciting final day of the Bilingual Primetime Reading Program hosted by Latinas Unidas!

We were truly honored to welcome Mayor Mildred Ferguson, who joined us to read with our families and present certificates to each participant.

A heartfelt thank you to Reeves Memorial Medical Center for providing a delicious hamburger and hot dog meal. Huge thank you to Jesus and Wendy for grilling!

The celebration continued with fun games and the breaking of two beautiful piñatas made by Lorena Turrobiartes. A special thank you to Lorena for sharing her creativity and helping make the day even more memorable!

Thank you to all the families who participated and to the incredible women of Latinas Unidas for their dedication, passion, and hard work.

Following this evening’s DWCS Timberwolf Regiment and Choral Spring Concert, Luz Rodriguez, Ivonne Reyes, and Frances Mendez presented a check to Mallory Spradling. These funds were raised through a piñata contest at DWCS and matched by Latinas Unidas to support the school’s musical and performance programs under the guidance of Ms. Spradling.

The arts play a vital role in the lives of our youth—sparking creativity, building confidence, and giving students a meaningful way to express themselves. Supporting the arts is an investment in strong, inspired future generations.

Latinas Unidas is proud to support local students and the arts!

Abuelitas always know best! ❤️

Abuela maxing might really be the wellness plan. Our abuelas knew a thing or two about living well by living slower. Do you do any of these already, or which ones did your grandmother do growing up?

Thank you Union Parish Library for joining us at our Primetime Reading Program!

Our library has camping equipment, fishing poles and so much more for checkout. Visit our library to learn more about all the amazing things they have!

Tonight we ended our National Library Week with an indoor camping trip for the Latinas Unidas Family Reading Program! They loved our story…once upon a campfire! Did you know that your library has tents available for checkout? Come ask us about camping close to home!

Our last but not least staff person to share a “book that brings them joy” is Ivonne Reyes. Ivonne is by far our busiest young librarian! She goes to college full-time, works two jobs part-time, volunteers for Latina Unidas, her church, and supports her family. For us she is our teen coordinator, our IT facilitator, and mural artist. She helps nearly every single coworker with their own projects too! She is our most joyful staff person even when we are not. In the end we are all BETTER because of her! We saved the best for last!

We had such a great night at Primetime Reading Program this week!

Our friends from Union Parish Library brought out tents and equipment available for checkout and led us through a fun and engaging skit—our families loved it!
It was also election night! This week we read Sophia Valdez for President, and after a very tough decision, we did something pretty special—we elected BOTH of our candidates as co-presidents!

As their first official act, our new co-presidents made an exciting decision: hamburgers AND hotdogs for next week’s final session!

We also had two young ladies step into the roles of storyteller and scholar alongside our Latinas this week. They worked hard to prepare and did a fabulous job!

A big thank you to our friends from Brokers of Hope for feeding our families and sharing about their valuable services. We appreciate your continued support!

Last night, Union Parish Library hosted its 15th Annual Poetry Slam

Our own Mary Barrios served as a judge, and Latinas Unidas proudly presented Rebecca Murillo with the Raíces Latinas Award—given each year to a young Latina/o to encourage and recognize their talent.

Rebecca Murillo, daughter of Rogelio and Aurora Murillo and a student at Darbonne Woods Charter School, participated for the first time this year—congratulations, Rebecca!

Pictured are Frances Mendez, Ivonne Reyes, Rebecca Murillo, and Mary Barrios.

Thank you to Library Director Stephanie Herrmann and her staff for hosting such a fantastic event and for inviting Latinas Unidas to be a part of it all.

Week 4 was a wonderful experience! A big thank you to our friends and community partners at CommuniHealth for the delicious food and for sharing such valuable information about your services and clinics throughout Union Parish. We also loved the maracas—making music together was so much fun!

Both of our groups enjoyed Abuela by Arthur Dorros, a Parents’ Choice Award winner. The story follows Rosalba and her grandmother on a magical journey as they soar above the streets, sights, and people of New York City sparkling below.

Wendy and Chris amazed us all with the shadow box and how they helped our storyteller, Natali, truly bring the story to life.

Can’t wait until next week!
