Recently the U.S. Senate voted to reauthorize the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative for an additional 4 years! Thank you Senator Chuck Schumer and U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand in supporting the continuation of a program that has been so successful in restoring our Great Lakes—cleaning up toxics, fighting invasive species, restoring habitat, and more! 🌊

The House had previously voted to reauthorize the GLRI for five years.

🌊 Take action to protect New York's waterways!

Today is World Octopus Day, and New York has a chance to stop an environmentally destructive industry before it takes hold. 🐙

Because octopuses are carnivores, farming them at industrial scale would require large quantities of wild-caught fish and crabs as feed, putting even more pressure on already overfished oceans. Estimates suggest it takes roughly three pounds of fish to produce a single pound of farmed octopus.

The damage wouldn't stop there. Industrial marine animal farming has well-documented environmental costs, including nutrient pollution that fuels harmful algal blooms, disease outbreaks, antibiotic use, and escapes that threaten wild populations. Bringing octopus farming to New York would put our waterways at risk of lasting harm.

New York's legislature has already acted. The bill to ban octopus farming (S.7421B/A.8043C) passed with strong bipartisan support, 55–5 in the Senate and 129–13 in the Assembly.

The final step is Governor Hochul's signature.
