These are some of our new faces, and with so many new followers lately, I’d like to explain again exactly what I do.
I do not work for Fish and Wildlife. I am a licensed wildlife rehabilitator with a permit through the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife. I am not paid by the state of Kentucky.
I also do not use volunteers unless they have completed the required basic course. I care for many Rabies Vector Species, and I cannot risk a volunteer being scratched or bitten and having one of my animals euthanized as a result. It simply is not worth the risk. I would rather do it all myself, and I do.
Many of the animals rehabbers receive are extremely compromised. Some have been without their mother for days, sometimes over a week. Some have fallen from trees, been hit by cars, suffered broken bones, or arrived emaciated, terrified, dehydrated, and confused. It takes a tremendous emotional toll.
For years, I always had my husband to lean on, someone to cry to, someone to help pick up an animal, someone who understood this life completely. Now it is just me.
I cannot always drop everything and immediately pick up an animal. If I leave during feeding schedules, it puts me behind on around the clock care for the babies already here. I am one person, and I simply cannot take every animal. I do my very best to help by offering resources or finding another rehabber whenever possible.
Please be kind.
My phone begins ringing before 7:00 AM and often does not stop until well after dark. Sometimes I cannot answer because I am literally holding bottles and feeding babies. Please be patient with me.
The cost of supplies is enormous. My formula bill alone is staggering. I opened a 20 pound tub of raccoon formula on Friday, and by today it will already be gone. I also use species specific formulas for opossums, skunks, and squirrels.
If you would like to help the babies, formula can be purchased through Fox Valley Nutrition and mailed to:
Western Kentucky Wildlife
1010 Mathis Rd.
Farmington, KY 42040
Purina Dog Chow also goes very quickly. A 44 pound bag can be purchased through Chewy or Walmart for under $30.
Walmart gift cards for animal supplies are always appreciated as well.
As always, thank you for supporting wildlife rehabilitation, for supporting me, and for caring about these animals.
Let’s show kindness to each other. Let’s show kindness to the animals.
