On Saturday, May 30, 2026, members of the Farmington Fire Department joined firefighters from Apple Valley, Cottage Grove, Rudolph, and Marshall Fire Departments for an intensive Live Fire Training event at Flint Hills Resources–Pine Bend Refinery.

The training was coordinated and led by the Rural Metro Fire Department, the refinery’s on-site contracted fire department. This unique opportunity allowed firefighters from multiple agencies to work together in realistic, high-hazard scenarios that are difficult to replicate during routine training.

Throughout the day, personnel strengthened their skills in high-pressure fire suppression, flammable liquid fire control, foam application techniques, search operations, and interior firefighting. Just as importantly, the training emphasized teamwork, communication, and coordination between departments critical components of a successful emergency response.

By training together in a challenging environment, firefighters gain valuable experience, build stronger working relationships, and enhance their ability to protect the communities they serve. We appreciate the commitment of all participating departments, Flint Hills Resources- Pine Bend and the Rural Metro Fire Department for providing this outstanding training opportunity.

The Farmington Fire Department proudly recognizes Fire Marshal Heath Walker, B-Shift Captain Brian Hanson, Lieutenant Justin Kelly, Firefighter Dave Standke, Firefighter Taylor Hunsinger, and Firefighter Kristopher Janke for successfully completing the Building Construction for the Fire Service course through Century College.
Building construction knowledge is a foundational element of modern fireground operations. This course focuses on how different construction types: wood frame, steel, concrete, and composite systems react and fail when exposed to fire conditions. Members study how fire affects structural components over time, including loss of strength, deformation, and collapse potential.
A key component of the training is understanding building classification systems and fire resistance ratings, which help predict how long structural elements may maintain integrity during fire conditions. This directly supports size-up, risk assessment, and operational decision-making.
The course also reinforces the hazards associated with interior and exterior fire suppression operations in compromised structures, emphasizing firefighter safety, situational awareness, and structural stability considerations on the fireground.
Continued education in building construction enhances our ability to anticipate fire behavior within structures and improves overall safety and effectiveness in protecting our community.
We are proud of their commitment to excellence and their continued investment in serving the Farmington community with professionalism, skill, and pride.

On Saturday May 16, 2026, members of the Farmington Fire Department participated in the Tunnel to Towers 5K Run & Walk Twin Cities, MN.

The Tunnel to Towers Foundation was created to honor the sacrifice of FDNY firefighter Stephen Siller, who gave his life on September 11, 2001, after running through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to the Twin Towers carrying his gear to help others.

Today, the foundation continues that mission by supporting America’s first responders, military service members, veterans, and their families.

Their programs provide:
• Mortgage-free homes for Gold Star and fallen first responder families
• Smart homes for catastrophically injured veterans and first responders
• Homeless veteran housing and support services
• Disaster relief and community assistance

The Tunnel to Towers Foundation stands as a reminder that service, sacrifice, and patriotism still matter. Every donation helps provide hope and support to families who have sacrificed so much for our country and communities.

“While we have time, let us do good.” 🇺🇸

On Saturday, May 2, 2026, the Farmington Fire Department celebrated its annual awards banquet at Glenhaven Events. This annual gathering recognizes the dedication and commitment of the members of our department, as well as the unwavering support provided by their spouses and significant others throughout the year.

Please join us in congratulating our 2025 award recipients for their outstanding dedication, leadership, professionalism, and commitment to serving our community.

2025 Firefighter of the Year: Crew Leader Rick Fischer

2025 Fire Officer of the Year: Lieutenant Jason Graham

These awards are especially meaningful because the recipients are nominated and selected by their peers; the individuals who work alongside them, respond to calls with them, and witness firsthand the character, leadership, and dedication they bring to the department every day.

These awards are not simply about calls answered or years served. They recognize the people who show up every day with humility, heart, and an unwavering commitment to others. The individuals who can always be counted on; whether it’s on an emergency scene, in the station, or supporting their brothers, sisters, and community when it matters most.

Jason and Rick continuously demonstrate our core values of Loyalty, Morality, Professionalism, Dedication, and Integrity in everything they do. Their leadership, work ethic, compassion, and selflessness embody our department motto: “Serving Those in Need.”

The impact they have made within this department reaches far beyond the uniform. They have earned the respect of their peers, strengthened the culture of our organization, and made a difference in the lives of the people we proudly serve.

Thank you both for the sacrifices you make, the example you set, and the dedication you continue to show every single day. We are honored to serve alongside you.

Congratulations on this well-deserved recognition.

On Saturday, May 2, 2026, Farmington Firefighter Meghan Carlson participated in helping facilitate the Women Explore Fire Day in Minnesota, an event focused on introducing women to the fire service through hands-on experience, mentorship, and teamwork.

Why this matters:
Less than 10% of firefighters nationwide are women, and programs like this are helping change that by creating opportunities to experience the fire service firsthand. Fire departments across Minnesota and across the country continue to face staffing shortages, making recruitment and community involvement more important than ever.

During the event, participants had the opportunity to:
• Try on real fire gear
• Experience hose handling, medical skills, and fireground basics
• Meet inspiring women and men in the fire service
• Build confidence in a supportive, team-centered environment
• Learn how they can serve their community in a rewarding and meaningful way

Events like Women Explore Fire Day help break down barriers, build confidence, and inspire the next generation of firefighters and first responders. The Farmington Fire Department is proud to support opportunities that encourage leadership, service, and inclusion within the fire service.

The Farmington Fire Department is proud to announce the promotion of Firefighters Justin Kelly and Mary Olson to the rank of Lieutenant.

This promotion represents years of dedication, professional growth, and a continued commitment to serving the City of Farmington. Both Lieutenant Kelly and Lieutenant Olson have consistently demonstrated strong leadership, sound decision-making under pressure, and a commitment to mentoring others within the fire service.

In the fire service, the role of a Lieutenant is a critical leadership position. Company officers are responsible for guiding crews during emergency operations, ensuring safe and effective incident management, and fostering an environment of training, accountability, and readiness. Their leadership directly supports both firefighter safety and the protection of our community.

A pinning ceremony recognizing their promotion will be held on May 18th at City Hall, where family, friends, and members of the department will gather to celebrate this well-earned achievement.

Please join us in congratulating Lieutenant Justin Kelly and Lieutenant Mary Olson on this milestone in their careers and thanking them for their continued service to the community.
