Meet the Hedges family — our 2026 Fund A Cure Family for Party With 1 Purpose!

Ryan, Sarah, Colin and Luke Hedges are sharing their story to help move us closer to a cure.

When Luke was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D) at just six years old, the Hedges family's world changed overnight. Today, managing T1D means around-the-clock blood-sugar monitoring, insulin, medical devices and sleepless nights filled with alarms. Incredible advances have made living with T1D safer — but there is still no cure.

Luke is an energetic 9-year-old who loves soccer, snowmobiling, dirt biking and making people smile. T1D doesn't define him, but it impacts every single day of his life. The Hedges family's dream is simple: a future where Luke can just be a kid.

One year ago, we lost John T. Higgins — Team Higgins captain, tireless advocate, and one of the biggest hearts in our Breakthrough T1D Ride community. 💙

John rode his first Breakthrough T1D Ride in 2015 in Burlington, VT, in honor of his daughter Meghan, who lives with type 1 diabetes (T1D). What started as one ride turned into more than a decade of dedication — training, fundraising, and finding any excuse to talk about the Ride with anyone who'd listen.

Today, his family and friends carry his spirit forward as Team Higgins, riding this September in Cape Cod in his memory. And through the new John T. Higgins Spirit Scholarship, sponsored by his friends at TeamFish, his legacy is welcoming a new generation of first-year riders into this community.

Ride on, John. We miss you, and we ride for you. 🚴💙

Meet the Batchelors — our 2026 Party with 1 Purpose Family Honorees!

Jeremy, Brianna, Jackson (11), Wyatt (9) and Estelle (6) are all in when it comes to family — cheering each other on, chasing memories, and showing up for one another every single day.

At just three years old, Jackson was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D). Overnight, the Batchelors learned a new language: finger sticks, insulin, carb counting and sleepless nights. But T1D has never defined Jackson. Today he's an 11-year-old who gives everything he has on the football field and soccer field alike — earning MVP honors and taking on club soccer with the same determination, leadership and positive attitude that shine through in all he does.

For nearly eight years, the Batchelor family has turned that same determination toward something bigger than themselves, proudly supporting Breakthrough T1D through fundraising, advocacy and raising awareness — helping move research closer to better treatments and a cure.
