๐Ÿ”ฅStage 1 Fire Restrictions are now in effect.

Our Canyon Patrol deputies have spent the last several weeks educating residents about current fire restrictions. As fire danger remains high, enforcement efforts will continue to increase.

What does that mean for you?

๐ŸšซExploding targets are prohibited.

๐ŸšซTracer rounds and steel-jacketed ammunition are prohibited.

๐ŸšซSmoking is prohibited except within enclosed vehicles, buildings, developed recreation sites, or cleared areas free of vegetation.

๐ŸšซActivities that create sparks, including welding, cutting, and grinding, require proper fire prevention measures and extreme caution.

๐ŸšซCampfires and open fires are only permitted in approved developed campgrounds and designated recreation areas with approved fire rings or grills.

๐Ÿ”ฅThe reality is simple: one spark can quickly become a wildfire that threatens homes, communities, first responders, and Utahโ€™s natural resources.

Whether youโ€™re camping, target shooting, riding trails, working outdoors, or simply enjoying the mountains, these restrictions apply to you.

๐Ÿพ Hot cars can become deadly in minutes.

Even on a mild day, temperatures inside a parked vehicle can rise rapidly, putting pets at serious risk.

If youโ€™re running errands, leave your pets at home where they can stay cool and safe. Cracking the windows is not enough to protect them from dangerous heat.

Please take a moment to review this important information from our partners at Animal Care of Davis County.

Keep your pets safe this summer! This is your reminder when out and about with your pup to please take a moment and consider the ๐—น๐—ถ๐—ณ๐—ฒ-๐˜๐—ต๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด risks of leaving pets or children in parked vehicles.

Even on a cooler day, the temperature inside a parked car can rise incredibly fast. In Utah, summer temperatures often reach the 90ยฐs, and in just 10 minutes, the inside of a vehicle can become ๐—ป๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—น๐˜† ๐Ÿฎ๐Ÿฌยฐ ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐—ด๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฒ๐˜€ ๐—ต๐—ผ๐˜๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฟ. Within 30 minutes, temperatures can exceed 110ยฐ degrees and quickly become life-threatening. Cracking the windows does not provide enough ventilation to keep your pet safe.

If you see an animal showing signs of ๐—ต๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐˜๐˜€๐˜๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—ธ๐—ฒ inside a vehicle; such as excessive panting, drooling, vomiting, or collapsing, please ๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐—ป๐˜๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐˜ ๐—น๐—ผ๐—ฐ๐—ฎ๐—น ๐—น๐—ฎ๐˜„ ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ณ๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ฐ๐—ฒ๐—บ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜ ๐—ถ๐—บ๐—บ๐—ฒ๐—ฑ๐—ถ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ฒ๐—น๐˜† by calling (801) 451-4150. When temperatures rise, the safest place for your pet is ๐—ฎ๐˜ ๐—ต๐—ผ๐—บ๐—ฒ with plenty of water and shade.

To protect our communityโ€™s pets, Animal Care of Davis County and Davis County Sheriff's Office enforces a strict ๐˜‡๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ผ-๐˜๐—ผ๐—น๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฐ๐—ฒ ๐—ฝ๐—ผ๐—น๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐˜† for pets left in hot cars. When an officer responds to a call involving an animal in a vehicle and the outdoor temperatures are 70ยฐ or higher, the owner will be cited with a ๐—–๐—น๐—ฎ๐˜€๐˜€ ๐—• ๐— ๐—ถ๐˜€๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐—บ๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ผ๐—ฟ, punishable by up to 6 months in jail and up to a $1,000 fine.

Our summer motto: โ€œBe Cool, Not Cruel.โ€ Hot cars can turn deadly quickly โ€” no errand is worth risking a petโ€™s life.

Suspect Arrested in West Point Homicide Investigation

A suspect has been arrested for the homicide of James Witten that occurred in West Point on May 30, 2026.

Following an extensive investigation, detectives with the Davis County Sheriffโ€™s Office developed information regarding the suspectโ€™s identity and whereabouts by working with local law enforcement agencies in the areas where he was believed to be located.

On June 16, Axel Eduardo Chavez, 23, was taken into custody by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department in connection with the homicide investigation. The maroon Honda Civic believed to have been involved in the incident has been located, and investigators are no longer seeking information regarding its whereabouts.

Chavez is currently being held in Nevada pending extradition to Utah.

A no-bail arrest warrant was issued by the Davis County Attorneyโ€™s Office charging Chavez with:
โ€ขMurder F1
โ€ขFelony discharge of a firearm with serious bodily injury F2
โ€ขObstruction of justice in a criminal investigation F2
โ€ขProhibited dangerous weapon conduct F2

This remains an active investigation. Investigators are working to determine whether other parties were involved and, if so, to identify them.

The Davis County Sheriffโ€™s Office is asking anyone with information regarding Chavezโ€™s whereabouts between May 28 and June 16 to contact investigators.

Additional information will be released as it becomes available.
