U.S. residents are now required to use a REAL ID, or other federally accepted form of ID, in order to board domestic flights, enter nuclear power plants, and access federal facilities.

When you renew your license, you will receive a temporary paper license. This temporary license WILL NOT be accepted as identification to fly. Please allow 10–15 days to receive the actual REAL ID in the mail.

Setting the Record Straight: REAL ID Misinformation. As a license bureau employee, I have witnessed the unnecessary panic caused by misinformation about the REAL ID. The federal government's mandate applies only to specific situations, such as domestic flights, military bases, and certain federal facilities. It's crucial to understand that other documents, like passports and TSA-approved documents, also grant access to these places. The media's misinformation has caused undue stress, leading to overcrowding at license offices. I encourage individuals to educate themselves and recognize that there is no deadline to obtain a REAL ID. The effective date is May 7, 2025, and you can apply at any time, before or after. Please respect license bureau employees, as we do not create the rules for acceptable documents. If you have concerns, please contact the Director of Revenue, Senator, or Secretary of State.
