Childhaven Receives $5,000 Grant from Navajo Transitional
Energy Company for Shelter Lighting Upgrades
FARMINGTON, NM — June 11, 2026 — Childhaven announced today that it received a $5,000 grant from the Navajo Transitional Energy Company (NTEC) Community Benefit Fund. This funding was awarded to support the Childhaven Emergency Children’s Shelter Lighting Project; a vital infrastructure initiative focused on modernizing the organization's 10,000-square-foot emergency shelter facility.
The grant funds were utilized to update outdated light fixtures that had been in place since the shelter was constructed in 1994. With NTEC’s generous financial support, along with other funding, Childhaven successfully upgraded 114 failing fixtures with energy-efficient LED units. The completed upgrades were in high-priority areas, including children’s bedrooms, the nursery, and main hallways.
This transition to energy-efficient lighting immediately enhances the safety, visual comfort, and physical environment for the vulnerable youth finding refuge at the shelter. By providing a secure, well-lit space that keeps sibling groups together during times of extreme crisis, the 24/7 emergency shelter serves as a critical, trauma-informed emergency placement for children ages 0-17 in San Juan County, NM and across the state.
Beyond creating a brighter and more welcoming environment for children in crisis, the new LED lighting significantly reduces the facility’s annual electricity consumption. The resulting utility cost savings directly benefit the community by allowing Childhaven to redirect operational resources back into direct-care services. Childhaven is deeply grateful to NTEC for their investment in the safety, sustainability, and long-term well-being of local youth.
