Based on collective memories, a stay at Eggers and Company General Store B & B is reminiscent of visiting grandparents in the country. After a pleasant drive through the beautiful countryside of eastern Perry County, the story of rural America in the mid 1900’s unfolds as you step across the threshold. The General Store with house attached is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and

has been lovingly restored by owners Ellen and Steve Frye. Ellen’s grandfather, Martin ”Tom” Eggers and his brother Walt were the store owners from 1920 through 1966. Many original artifacts remain in tribute to the Eggers family, the town of Farrar and rural America in those decades.

Opening day for baseball season is just around the corner! Back in the day, all the small towns had their own team. Grandma Eggers brother, Alfred Kaempfe, played for the Farrar Ramblers. He passed down his wool(!) jersey to my Uncle Homer. My cousin Nancy gifted it to Eggers & Co. after she repaired the lettering on the front. I just had it framed thanks to gifts from my Eggers cousins. The photo is the Ramblers team in 1930. My Great Uncle Walt (Grandpa Eggers brother) is on the right as he was the team manager. Uncle Alfred is standing third from the right.

There’s a spare Santa outfit in the Farrar branch office. Here’s the back story…

Many, many years ago on a December evening, Mommy (Vera) was making dinner in the kitchen, and Daddy (Charlie) had to work late. The doorbell rang and Mommy asked me to answer. When I opened the door, I saw Santa on the front porch going down the steps. There was a package left behind. I was very excited and called out to Mommy, “Santa was here! He left a box!” She came running into the living room. We brought the box in to open it and found what I called, ‘My White Santa.’ I was pretty excited to show Daddy my White Santa when he finally came home from work. (Wink)

My ‘White Santa’ is now a decoration in the ‘Girl’s Room’ at Eggers & Co.
