We are aware that warmer weather is right around the corner. But with that in mind we wanted to make sure to try and put something out for the community as far as what is safe and legal to be on the roadways.
Electric Bikes, Scooters, Golf Carts, Razors, Side-by-Side, and Motorized Bikes - Know the Rules
We've seen an increase in calls about electric bikes and scooters around the community. While many of these are legal to ride some motorized bikes or ATVs are not allowed on public roads under Texas law.
To help everyone better understand the differences, we've included a quick reference chart explaining when and where certain electric vehicles can be ridden.
Here are a few key things to know:
1.) E-Bikes must have fully operable pedals and a motor of 750 watts or less
2.) E-Bikes do not require a driver license or registration
3.) Operators of a class 3 e-bike must be at least 15 years old under state law.
4.) Stand-up electric scooters do not require a license or registration and may be used on roads with speed limits of 35 mph or less.
Vehicles that look like dirt bikes but do not have pedals are not considered e-bikes and are generally not street legal. These types of vehicles are intended for off-road or private property use only.
Golf carts are not titled in TX, but they must display a special Golf Cart license plate when operated on public streets. By state law, golf carts (max speed ~25 mph) can be driven on roads with speed limits of 35 mph or less, during daylight, and generally within a 2-mile radius of where they’re usually parked (often a golf course or in a master-planned community). Cities may pass ordinances authorizing broader golf cart use on local streets (still capped at 35 mph roads). Additionally, golf carts must have the required safety equipment and a valid driver's license to operate on public roads.
Razors and side-by-sides are not street legal. These vehicles must be registered and must have insurance, and the driver must be licensed. There are certain safety requirements for these types of vehicles to be street legal. These include safety lights, side mirrors, rear mirrors, front windshield, registration, bumpers, and a horn. If the Polaris RZR is missing any of these components, then it will not be considered legal to drive on the roads at all in the state.
Parents are encouraged to check what type of vehicle their child is riding and make sure it is legal to operate on public streets.
We encourage everyone to be vigilant while traveling on the roadways and be aware of your surroundings for any other travelers.
Please ride safely and everyone must follow all traffic laws while operating these types of vehicles. 👮🏼♂️
