***Community Complaint***

Parents of children with electric bikes and electric scooters please advise your children the importance of road safety. We have received reports of children not adhering to stop signs and flying through intersections. Some of these children have been talked to but we are still receiving reports from those we have not. For the safety of our community please have kids stop at stop signs and wear safety equipment. Some trucks and automobiles may not see the kids and there could be an accident with terrible consequences. South Dakota law does require operators of these devices to adhere to the same laws as if they were driving a car.

The South Dakota Department of Transportation (SDDOT) is reminding travelers to stay alert for continuing “toll road” scam messages. Some residents have reported receiving texts claiming they owe payment for an overdue toll in order to travel on South Dakota roads.

All state owned roads and bridges in South Dakota are completely toll free, and the SDDOT will never contact motorists asking for toll payments.

If you receive a message like this, please delete. Do not click any links or provide personal information.

From a historical viewpoint, South Dakota hasn’t seen “tolls” since the Deadwood stagecoach era! During the 1870s Black Hills Gold Rush, stagecoach routes and river crossings around the Dakota Territory often operated as private toll roads; as issued and collected by private entities! With farmers hitting the fields for spring planting please be patient when approaching tractors or large farm machinery. These vehicles move slower, and need more space to safely navigate bridges, intersections and field entrances. A few extra minutes could save a life.
