Jefferson County Board Of Supervisors End The Year With An Outstanding Meeting
The Jefferson County Board of Supervisors had a full day board meeting with the Central Commissioner for P***c Service Brent Bailey and the Central Transportation Commissioner Willie Simmons. The room was full of citizens who wanted to gain knowledge on the future of rural broadband and transportation. On the morning side, after the standard meeting agenda, Public Service Commissioner Bailey provided a wealth of information to the broadband dilemma in many rural Mississippi areas. He discussed their role and the hopes of the companies that was awarded the bids to partner with our local rural utility to provide those services. Mayor Londell Eanochs, also an IT guru, detailed many of the problems he has seen in our community. He also discussed the probability of putting antennas on the city water tower to improve internet services. The question was also asked to Southwest Electric about them leaving the county for Brookhaven. Mr. Scott Campbell of SWMEPA indicated this would only be a response time yard for trucks and dispatchers, but they are discussing some building expansions at the Lorman site.
After lunch the meeting was called back to order Central Transportation Commissioner Willie Simmons discussed the projects slated for Jefferson County under MDOT. However, he did indicate that none of the infrastructure funds were slated for MDOT and there has not been an increase in their budgets since 1987. Mr. Windell Carter asked about the J-Turn and he wanted a copy of the finished product and the Commissioner indicated it would be a finished product of the temporary one but would oblige his request. Commissioner Simmons said that there will be overlaying of Highways 553 and 28, as well as the completion of the Highway 61 J-Turn. All of those projects will be an investment of 4.6 million dollars by MDOT into the roadways of Jefferson County.
The Board recognized Dr. Felicia Naves, President of Alcorn State University. Dr. Naves expressed the appreciation for the invite and praised the board for their future partnership with the new cultural and heritage center. She also recognized Dr. Wooten and Dr. Busby from the University.
The day concluded with the acceptance of new garbage truck from Truckworxs and Ingram Equipment. The new truck will increase the county’s capacity for reliable and timely pickup. The Board chose to combine the services to a Monday-Thursday routes to allow time for preventative maintenance on the trucks.
The Board was very thankful that citizens came out to support this information session and give them a clear picture of the barriers rural communities with limited resources such as our face with fulfilling the many needs.
