The Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina is honored to announce the Michael Olof Paulson Scholarship will open for submissions on August 18, 2026. The Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina is awarding six $5,000 scholarships in memory of Michael.

Michael Olof Paulson’s life touched many people around the globe. Born in Sweden, he was an aviator, a historian and an enthusiast, as well as a great friend. After his death in 2022, his friends from around the nation wanted to celebrate his life and honor his wish to give the gift of education, as directed in his will. They searched across the country for an American Indian Tribe to present the gift to. They chose the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina to honor his will by giving an endowment gift for scholarships. Michael dreamed and lived life to the fullest. That dream now extends to Lumbee students.

How to Apply for the Michael Paulson Scholarship

The Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina is awarding six $5,000 scholarships in memory of Michael Paulson!
Important Dates:
* Application Opens: August 18, 2026 at 8:00 am
* Deadline to Apply: August 25, 2026 at
* Recipients Notified: By September 12, 2026

Eligibility Requirements:
* Must be a full-time student (sophomore or higher in undergrad, or grad school)
* Must have a minimum 2.7 GPA
* Must be an active enrolled member of the Lumbee Tribe (valid enrollment card required)

What You Need to Submit:
1. Completed application (do not retype)
2. Official transcript (from registrar’s office)
3. Copy of Class Schedule
4. Certificate of full-time enrollment provided by your institution
5. Copy of active Tribal Card
6. 3–5 min video on Lumbee Tribal Government and leaders (MP4 format)
7. Two essays (PDF format
8. Resume (PDF format)
9. Two letters of recommendation (PDF format – one must be academic)

Chairman John Lowery thank you for the great news yesterday with presentation of the new $50M+ tribal budget. Stead gains for our tribal family.

Chairman, I believe the photo below captures perfectly my appreciation. Thank you for your service, dedication and most of all the love you have for the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina.

This morning, we hear the voice of the Lumbee people.

The people have spoken, and as Speaker, I respect the decision of our people. I want to thank every Lumbee citizen who participated, whether you voted yes, voted no, asked hard questions, challenged the process, or simply showed up because you care about the future of our Tribe.

A vote of the people is never something to dismiss. It is something to honor.

The result means the Tribe does not have a path forward on gaming at this time. But it does not mean our work stops. It means we must listen, learn, and rebuild trust where trust was strained.

There are lessons here for all of us. We cannot assume the people are with us simply because we believe the issue is important.

We cannot wait until the end of a process to explain something that should have been explained from the beginning.

We cannot allow communication to feel rushed or overwhelming.

And we must acknowledge that many of our people had real and legitimate concerns.

That is not division. That is self-government.

We also must continue to be transparent as our people deserve clear answers, lawful oversight, and confidence that decisions involving tribal resources are being handled with accountability and care.

To those who supported the amendments, your hope for economic opportunity matters.

To those who opposed them, your concerns about process, trust, and protection of the people’s voice also matter.

We are still one Lumbee people.

The question now is not how we relitigate the vote. The question is how we move forward together with more humility, more transparency, and more respect for one another.

We have faced harder moments than this.

We are still Lumbee. We are still family. And our responsibility now is to take what the people have said and use it to build a stronger, more accountable tribal government for the generations coming behind us.

Not trying to change anyone's vote, but be responsive to the questions being heard. Sharing why this approach creates clear authority, protects the People's vote and preserves the Constitution's division of power, all the while strengthening oversight and building a government that can pursue economic development opportunities AND be accountable to the Lumbee People.
