While we wait for cooler weather to finally show up, a few small changes around the house can help keep your energy use in check:

• Set your thermostat as high as comfortably possible and avoid big temperature swings.
• Use ceiling fans when you’re in the room to help you feel cooler without lowering the thermostat.
• Keep blinds and curtains closed during the hottest parts of the day, especially on sun-facing windows.
• Run dishwashers, dryers, and other heat-producing appliances during cooler parts of the day when possible.
• Check your HVAC filter and replace it if it’s dirty. A clean filter helps your system work more efficiently.
• Seal gaps around windows and doors to keep that expensive cool air where it belongs.

Fans are a great cooling tool for some of the hottest days of summer, but it's important to remember to turn them off once you leave the room. Otherwise, you run the risk of having a higher bill. Fans cool people (and pets), not rooms!

Depending on the size of your house (and your oven), you've probably noticed that once you start cooking, your AC kicks on within minutes and stays on for a while after you're done cooking as it tries to replace the warm air created by your oven or stovetop with cool air. During the hottest days of the year, this can not only increase your electric bill, but it can also make your home feel uncomfortably warm. If you have other means of cooking your food, such as an outdoor grill or an air fryer, consider using these methods instead from time to time.
