We are aware that the remains of the abandoned structure that burned a few weeks ago, on Lake Sequoyah Road, are still smoldering and even flaming from time to time. This will continue for the coming days. There is no danger.

We know most of you are quite aware of the upcoming closure of the Lake Sequoyah Bridge. We wanted to pass along that service from our department will change very little. A few years ago we added Station 3 on Wyman Road, partly in preparation for the bridge closure. Our response time to Baldwin is the same from Station 3 as Station 1. You may see our partners at Fayetteville or Elkins Fire Department’s from time to time during the closure, specifically on high acuity calls. The closure is for sure an inconvenience, but the renovations are very needed!

Wednesday August 12th, at 9:52 PM we responded for a structure fire. First arriving units found a single story abandoned house fully involved and collapsing. We quickly had Engines and Tankers on scene from Station’s 1 and 3. A defensive attack was initiated and we quickly brought the fire under control.

A huge thank you to our aid partners Elkins, Goshen and Fayetteville Fire Departments for their assistance and Central EMS for being on standby.

Chief Boyd died after suffering a heart attack. He was helping firefighters who were unloading lumber for the construction of a second station. Earlier in the day they had loaded all the lumber in Fayetteville. Firefighters started CPR and Chief Boyd was transported to Washington Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. Chief Boyd was the first chief on the Round Mountain Fire Department.

Just a reminder, turn around, don’t drown! Flash Flooding is a real problem in our area. The recent and upcoming storm systems drop a large amount of rain in a short period of time causing river and creek levels to rise rapidly. Please do not drive thru water, no matter how shallow you think it is. If you do not already have severe weather alerts from Washington County, sign up today and be sure to sign up for Flash Flood warnings. The National Weather Service only sends “forced” flash flood warnings for a “Flash Flood Emergency”. Last weekends flooding caught several off guard and we responded to people trapped in their homes and washing away from a camp site. Be prepared!
