TROPICAL STORM 🌀: has formed in the Gulf, becoming the first named storm of the 2026 Atlantic Hurricane Season.

Cumberland County is not expected to experience any direct impacts from this system. However, it serves as an important reminder that hurricane season is officially underway.

Now is the time to:
✔️ Review your family emergency plan
✔️ Check and restock your emergency kit
✔️ Ensure you have multiple ways to receive weather alerts
✔️ Know your flood risk and evacuation routes

Even when a storm isn't headed our way, it only takes one storm to make it a memorable season.

Potential Tropical Cyclone One is now Tropical Storm Arthur. It will be a short-lived tropical storm, as it will be over the Gulf for a very short period of time before moving inland over Texas and Louisiana.

Severe storms are possible today across central NC from late afternoon through the evening. Damaging wind gusts are possible. In addition, dangerously hot weather continues today, with highs in the mid 90s to low 100s. A heat advisory is in effect for all of central NC.

🌡️ Extreme heat is impacting our area, and cooling stations are open for those who need relief.

If you must be outdoors:
💧 Drink plenty of water
🧢 Wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing
⏰ Limit strenuous activities during the hottest part of the day
🌳 Take frequent breaks in the shade or air conditioning

Never leave children, older adults, or pets in a parked vehicle — temperatures can become deadly in minutes.

Know the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, and check on family, friends, and neighbors who may be more vulnerable to the heat.

Stay cool. Stay hydrated. Stay safe.

Cumberland County, in partnership with the City of Fayetteville, NC Government and community partners, will open Cooling Centers from Thursday, June 11, through Monday, June 15, in response to forecasted heat index values ranging from 100°F to 107°F.

Residents without access to air conditioning are encouraged to visit a cooling center during normal business hours to stay cool and safe. Remember to drink plenty of water, limit outdoor activity during peak heat hours and check on older adults, young children, neighbors and pets.

🌀 2026 Atlantic Hurricane Season Has Officially Arrived 🌀

Today marks the official start of Atlantic Hurricane Season, which runs from June 1 through November 30.

Forecasters are currently predicting a slightly below-average season, largely due to El Niño conditions and increased wind shear across the Atlantic. In simple terms, the atmosphere may be a little less cooperative when it comes to tropical development.

That's the good news.

The other good news? There is currently no tropical activity forecast over the next several days.

The important news?

It only takes one.

Seasonal forecasts tell us how many storms might form. They do not tell us where they will go.

A below-average season can still produce a major hurricane with life-changing impacts. Power outages, flooding, downed trees, damaged homes, road closures, and lengthy recovery efforts don't care whether the season was above average or below average.

That's why now is the time to prepare.

✅ Review your emergency plan
✅ Refresh your emergency kit
✅ Check your insurance coverage
✅ Know your evacuation route
✅ Make sure you have multiple ways to receive emergency alerts

Below is this year's list of storm names. If you spot your name on the list, now would be a great time to have a polite conversation with the atmosphere and encourage it to remain a weak tropical disturbance far out at sea.
