Our hearts are hurting for Captain Kelley’s family, our brothers and sisters at the Benton County Sheriff’s Office and Centerton Police Department, his community, and all who knew and loved him. We mourn with you. 💙🏴😢

Our law enforcement family is mourning the loss of a truly remarkable man.

After many years of dedicated service, Chris Kelley, a longtime Deputy Sheriff with the Benton County Sheriff's Office, (Reserve Lieutenant), and Captain with the Centerton Police Department, has passed away.

He was more than a badge and a uniform. He was a respected leader, a trusted mentor, a loyal friend, a devoted husband, and a servant to his community. His kindness, wisdom, and unwavering commitment to others left a lasting impact on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.

He led with integrity, treated people with respect, and earned the admiration of colleagues, friends, and community members alike. His legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched throughout his career and beyond.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and all who served alongside him during this difficult time.

Thank you for your service, your friendship, and the example you set for so many. You will be deeply missed, but never forgotten.

Rest easy, brother. We have the watch from here.

On this Memorial Day, in honor of ALL military personnel who have died while serving in the Armed Forces, several from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office got up early this morning to complete the “Murph” workout.

“Murph is named after Lieutenant Michael P. Murphy, a Navy SEAL who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroic actions during Operation Red Wings in Afghanistan. On June 28, 2005, Murphy and his team were ambushed by Taliban forces. Despite being heavily outnumbered and under intense fire, Murphy risked his life to move to an open area to get a clear signal to communicate for help. He was mortally wounded during this act of bravery.

Michael Murphy was known for doing this workout, which he originally called "Body Armor," due to his practice of performing it in his body armor. After his death, CrossFit adopted the workout and renamed it
"Murph" in his honor, turning it into a Memorial Day tradition to honor fallen soldiers and reflect on their sacrifices.”

Today, Deputy Stevens from the Washington County Sheriff's Office Honor Guard and WCSO Lead Communications Officer Stevens, along with law enforcement officers, family members, and representatives from around the state, traveled to the Arkansas State Capitol to attend the 45th Annual State Peace Officers’ Memorial Day Service, which is held to remember and honor fallen officers. 💙

Memorial Wall at the State Capitol:

WE WILL REMEMBER THEM

WHEN TIME HAS PASSED AS THE FAMILY GRIEVES
WE WILL REMEMBER EACH ONE OF THESE

OUR FALLEN HEROES NAMED ON THIS WALL
GOD'S CHOSEN ONES WHO GAVE THEIR ALL

WE WILL REMEMBER THE SACRIFICE MADE
WHEN AT LAST, AT REST THEY ARE LAID

LEST WE FORGET THEIR NAMES ONE DAY
WHEN THEY ARE GONE AND PASSED AWAY

WE NAME THEM HERE SIDE BY SIDE
BROTHERS AND SISTERS AS WHEN THEY DIED

WE WILL REMEMBER THE BADGE THEY WORE
WHEN IT'S PUT AWAY FOREVERMORE

AND ALL THE NAMES WE’VE ETCHED HERE
WILL BE REMEMBERED THROUGH THE TEARS

YES, WE WILL REMEMBER THE NAMES ON THIS WALL
FOR THEIR MEMORY WILL LIVE...

IN THE HEARTS OF US ALL

Each May, our nation comes together to honor the courage, sacrifice and dedication of law enforcement officers. Originally established by presidential proclamation by President John F. Kennedy in 1962, National Police Week includes Peace Officers Memorial Day on May 15th and a week of observances recognizing officers who have given their lives in the line of duty, as well as those who continue to serve and protect our communities with dedication and courage.

National Police Week is both a time of solemn remembrance and a celebration of the men and women who serve with integrity and bravery every day. It reminds us that behind every badge is a story of service, sacrifice and family. - PoliceWeek.org

The 2026 NWA Law Enforcement Memorial Rose Ceremony will be held on May 15, 2026, at 11:00 a.m., and will take place on the steps of the Benton County Courthouse, located at 102 NE A St., Bentonville, AR 72712.

We hope you will be able to join us to honor those who have given the ultimate sacrifice for our communities, and to honor their families as well. Included will be the three deputies who gave the ultimate sacrifice from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office:

Deputy Roland “Pete” Williamson
November 7, 1995 🇺🇸

Deputy Casto C. Robertson
February 20, 1967 🇺🇸

Deputy John I. Mount
July 2, 1881 🇺🇸

On May 5, 1984, President Reagan issued Proclamation 5187, declaring the first National Correctional Officers Week. His proclamation acknowledged that while these professionals are an essential part of the criminal justice system, their work frequently goes unnoticed by the public. Reagan praised correctional officers for their “courage, dedication, and professionalism,” emphasizing the importance of honoring their service to the nation.
“The important work of correctional officers often does not receive the recognition from the public it deserves. It is appropriate that we honor the many contributions and accomplishments of these men and women who are a vital part of the law enforcement community.”
President Ronald Reagan, Proclamation 5187

Correctional officers and employees are responsible for maintaining safety and order within jails, prisons, and detention centers across the country. They manage high-risk, high-stress environments and perform duties that go far beyond security.

Correctional Officers Week serves as both a celebration and a reminder. It honors those who serve in silence and strength, and it calls upon all of us to recognize their contributions not just for one week, but year-round.

On this last day of National Correctional Officers Week, we want to say THANK YOU to our very own WCSO Correctional Officers, who work diligently and professionally, day in and day out, in service to our community. We couldn’t complete our mission without each and every one of you! You’re the BEST of the BEST!
