Hey, Friends! It’s Higbee. I want to wish you a PAW-some Labor Day weekend!

Before you enjoy the great outdoors, remember that dry conditions and a burn ban mean we all need to be extra careful.

• Follow the burn ban, no outdoor burning when it’s prohibited.
• Avoid anything that could create sparks or flames in dry grassy areas.
• Properly dispose of cigarette butts, never toss them on the ground.
• If you see smoke or a fire, call 911 and report it right away.

Let’s all do our part to keep our families, homes, and community safe this holiday weekend!

Have fun, stay safe, and don’t make me chase a fire truck!

What a day for Hiking with the Forester! During last Saturday’s adventure hike at Kessler Mountain Regional Park, we set out to learn about the oak species of the area—but we ended up uncovering something truly extraordinary.

Two hikers spotted two maple‑leaf oaks (Quercus acerifolia) near the top of the mountain. These trees are so rare that they naturally occur in only four places in the entire world, all right here in Arkansas. The find lined up perfectly with a general location described in a 2015 ecological assessment by botanist Theo Witsell.

Along the way, we also identified ten oak species, soaked in beautiful bluff views, explored Ozark rock outcrops, and enjoyed the stunning natural features that make Kessler Mountain such a gem.

A huge shout‑out to the 29 amazing hikers who joined us brought enthusiasm, sharp eyes, and great energy. And yes… the hike did end up being a bit longer than planned. Thanks for rolling with it like champs!

Next Adventure: Join us on for a Hickory identification and natural feature interpretive hike!
