Grants may come and go. Roles may change. We may have to shift, adjust, and find new ways to keep moving forward. But one thing remains constant: the love and commitment our staff and Board have for the Vision Resource Center and the people we serve. 💙

A heartfelt thank you to our Board and to Carrie and Patrick Callahan for giving our staff the opportunity to step away for a much-needed retreat—to reset, reconnect, and recharge.

As we navigate this new fiscal year, we are refreshed, focused, and ready to continue our mission. Whatever changes may come, our WHY remains the same. ❤️

And just like that, our 2026 Youth Summer Camp came to an end! 💚👁️

Our last two days were packed with learning, creativity, fun, and adventure. Our campers practiced CPR, created colorful tie-dye bags and hats, enjoyed relaxation time, played games, and let their imaginations take over with free clay sculpting.

Then, we wrapped up the week outdoors with a beautiful walk at Raven Rock State Park, a picnic together, and a tubing adventure at Cape Fear River Adventures, LLC !!

What a week! New experiences, new friendships, lots of laughter, and memories we hope our campers will carry with them long after summer is over.

To our campers, parents, and incredible volunteers: thank you for showing up, supporting one another, and making this Summer Camp such a special experience. We couldn't have done it without you!

Thank you Dropping Seeds in Motion for being our partners on this journey.

Until our next adventure, VRC Family!

*Special thanks to the Cumberland Community Foundation, Inc. for supporting this camp through the Summertime Kids Grants Program, as well as the Pay It Forward Endowment, anonymous donors, and the Kiwanis Club of Cape Fear for helping make this experience possible.

Youth Summer Camp is going by so fast! We're already halfway through. Today was all about learning, creating, and growing together!

Our campers participated in a Fire Emergency Training designed for children and youth who are visually impaired. Then we got our hands dirty by planting seeds while reflecting on how friendships are a lot like gardens. After sharing lunch, we painted nature sounds, and brought stories to life through movement with our partners from Dropping Seeds in Motion, then danced the conga, and ended the day with a reminder of the values that make our camp special: gratitude, respect, friendship, creativity, and teamwork.

YOUTH SUMMER CAMP, WHAT A FIRST DAY WE HAD! 👁️💚

We are so happy we finally got to meet these wonderful kids! Our first day was full of fun and served as a great icebreaker for the exciting week ahead.

Yesterday we welcomed our campers, got to know each of them a little better, learned about their interests, and started building new friendships. We spent the day singing, moving, painting, playing games, sharing lots of laughter, and of course, enjoying some pizza together!

Today we'll dive into our STEAM activities with our partners from Dropping Seeds in Motion. We can't wait to see what the rest of the week brings. We have a feeling each day will be even better than the last!

Their light lives on. 🤍

Yesterday, we gathered in our Sensory Garden to dedicate a special place of remembrance for the members of the Vision Resource Center who are no longer with us, but whose impact continues to shape our community every day.

Together with VRC friends, members, volunteers, board members, community partners, and supporters, we shared stories and moments of reflection as we dedicated our Memorial Garden Bench, a generous gift from Dr. Jay McLeod, Regional President of the Blind Veterans Association (BVA), in memory of former BVA President Lee Davis. We also unveiled a memorial stone, a wind chime, and special garden lights in honor of the VRC members we have lost.

This space would not exist without the incredible generosity of our Sensory Garden sponsors: United Way of Cumberland County, Cumberland Community Foundation, Cumberland County, Ray and Laura Yarborough, Healy Horticulture, NC State Cooperative Extension, and the Arts Council of Fayetteville/Cumberland County. Their support made this garden possible two years ago, and today it continues to serve as a place of peace, healing, reflection, and remembrance.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make this ceremony so special.

A special thank you to Chad Shelby, Horticulture Operations Manager at Cape Fear Botanical Garden, for helping make our fountain look beautiful for this special day, and to Gale and Ken from the Blind Veterans Association for assembling and installing the memorial bench.

May this garden continue to remind us that although our loved ones may be gone, their light continues to guide us. 🤍
