Ohio Principal Loses His Job After Taking In a Homeless Student — And Says He Has No Regrets.
Rob Burnside spent 31 years in education as principal of Lakota East High School near Cincinnati.
When a student named Landerius “DeDe” Hayes became homeless and was told he had to withdraw after his mother moved outside the district, Burnside and his wife took the teenager into their home.
District officials said they no longer believed he could be an effective leader. He was given the choice to step down or face termination. He left.
Hayes later offered to move back so Burnside wouldn’t lose his job. Burnside told him: “No. You’re gonna stay with me… You’re part of this family.”
They became his legal guardians. Hayes graduated this past May. Burnside still can’t get a principal job in the area. He has no regrets.
