The City will not unexpectedly request that payments be made by wire transfer based solely on an email. If you receive a suspicious message requesting payment do not send money, click links, open attachments, or provide sensitive information.

Instead, verify the request directly with the Permit Center by calling 253-835-2607 or emailing [email protected].

I want to be clear from the start: I do not support ICE’s actions in our communities, and I do not welcome ICE in Federal Way. Our immigrant and refugee neighbors are an important part of the fabric of our city. They are our friends, families, coworkers, business owners, students, and so much more, and they deserve to be treated with dignity and respect.

I’ve also seen the reports today about possible ICE activity in and around Federal Way. As far as I’m aware, the City has not received official notification or confirmation of these reported sightings, and it’s important to remember that federal immigration enforcement is separate from our local police department. ICE does not coordinate its activities with the Federal Way Police Department.

For me, this is deeply personal. I am an immigrant and a naturalized United States citizen. I have my Certificate of Citizenship, yet I find myself carrying that certificate with me wherever I go because I do not trust ICE.

There is something deeply troubling about feeling that I need to carry a document proving that I belong in the country I call home. History has taught us lessons on why we should pay attention when people begin to feel they must carry papers to prove who they are, where they belong, or whether they have the right to be somewhere. As an immigrant, those lessons are not abstract to me. Carrying my Certificate of Citizenship today makes me think about that history and about the responsibility we have as Americans to protect the freedoms and constitutional rights generations before us fought to secure.

I understand the fear and uncertainty many of our neighbors and families are experiencing. I’m doing what I can, and I will continue monitoring what is happening in our community and sharing reliable information when it becomes available.

Until then, please continue supporting our neighbors, making sure people know their rights, and looking out for one another. Federal Way is stronger because of the people who call it home, and I will continue standing with our immigrant and refugee communities.

Join us on for our annual Back 2 School Free Haircuts event on Tuesday, Aug. 25, at Town Square Park. Kids ages 5-18 can get their haircuts for free from a great group of local stylists.

This event is first come, first served, and no sign-up is required.

Please be advised…

The National Weather Service issued an air quality alert for our area through Wednesday due to expected wildfire smoke from regional fires. Beginning tonight, we may see a decrease in air quality to a level that is unhealthy for sensitive groups.

We will continue to monitor the situation in the coming days. As a result, our Kids Day event at Steel Lake Park on Wednesday afternoon may be canceled. We will make a final determination on Tuesday afternoon.

Please keep an eye on our social media for an update on the status of Kids Day. We will make the best decision for the health and safety of our community.

For those looking to escape the smoke over the next few days, the Federal Way Community Center is open to all residents during regular business hours.

The Community Center is open Monday through Friday, 5 a.m. to 9 p.m.

You are welcome to visit and enjoy the Community Center's public spaces at no charge. If you would like to use the pool, basketball court, fitness center or other recreational amenities, a day pass or membership will be required.

It was a wonderful Friday evening spent with friends, neighbors, and members of our community. Events like these are a great reminder of what makes our city such a special place. The music was fantastic, the salmon was delicious as always, and it was great to connect with so many familiar faces. Thank you to everyone who helped make it such an enjoyable evening!

What a wonderful way to start the day!

I was grateful to join community leaders, educators, coaches, families, and students at the South King Athlete Breakfast at Emerald Downs. It was inspiring to celebrate the young people across South King County who are excelling not only in athletics, but also in leadership, academics, and service to their communities.

Hearing from former Seahawk Jim Zorn and Dan Wilson was a great reminder that success is built through dedication, resilience, and surrounding yourself with a strong team.

A special thank you to King County Councilmember Pete von Reichbauer for continuing this outstanding tradition. Investing in and recognizing our young people is one of the best investments we can make, and it was an honor to be part of such a meaningful event.
