Friday, CAL FIRE CZU, in partnership with the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission , successfully completed a prescribed fire operation on approximately 5 acres of the San Andreas Dam face within the Peninsula Watershed.

Fire behavior and effects occurred as planned, with crews achieving the desired vegetation reduction objectives under favorable conditions.
The removal of overgrown grasses will help improve dam safety by allowing engineers to more effectively inspect the earthen dam for signs of cracking, erosion, slumping, or other potential concerns that can be obscured by dense vegetation.

In addition to meeting project objectives, the operation provided valuable hands-on training opportunities for firefighters and watershed personnel, strengthening firing operations, communication, and multi-agency coordination as we move into peak wildfire season.
A dedicated team of biologists was also on-site throughout the project to identify any sensitive species and ensure appropriate environmental protections and precautions were implemented before and during operations.

Crews remained engaged throughout the day to monitor conditions, secure the burn area, and ensure all objectives were safely met.

We extend our sincere appreciation to all personnel and partner agencies who contributed to the planning and ex*****on of this successful project, including the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission, Bay Area Air Quality Management District, biological resource specialists, and all responding fire and watershed staff. Your professionalism, collaboration, and commitment to public safety and environmental stewardship made this operation a success.

CAL FIRE CZU proudly recognizes the newest graduates of the Ione Training Center, celebrating the completion of the 63rd Regular Basic Course. 🎓

Among the graduates are Peace Officers Daniel Scheffler and David Weir, who will be returning to serve within the San Mateo-Santa Cruz Unit.

Nineteen recruits successfully completed the highly selective 22-week academy, earning certification as California POST peace officers. Over the course of the rigorous 664-hour program, recruits were challenged both mentally and physically through training in emergency vehicle operations, patrol procedures, advanced fi****ms instruction, and tactical defense.

The academy concluded with the demanding Work Sample Test Battery, ensuring each graduate is prepared to meet the high-pressure demands of the profession.

Congratulations to the entire graduating class on this outstanding achievement and commitment to public safety. County of San Mateo - Government County of Santa Cruz CAL FIRE Training Center

We have begun our prescribed fire on the face of San Andreas Dam on San Francisco Public Utilities Commission lands. Forester and Burn Boss Sarah Collamer explains the plan for today. You’ll notice in one photo a beautiful tree with bare dirt surrounding the base. Our Glenwood firefighter hand crews came in early and cleared vegetation from the base of the trees to prevent fire on the ground from getting into the canopy. Forestry Assistant II Alexander Hudson is serving as Field Observer (FOBS) and reads the weather each hour to ensure the fire stays within prescription. Fire Captain Austin Seely explains his UAS (drone) program and how it helps monitor hot spots for safety.

⚠️ BEACH HAZARDS WARNING ⚠️

Over the past few weeks, law enforcement and fire crews have responded to an increased number of water rescues. With warm weather expected this weekend, beaches across Santa Cruz County are expected to be crowded. Please keep safety a top priority:

•Never turn your back on the ocean.
•Watch for sneaker waves and changing surf conditions. These powerful waves can surge much higher and farther up the beach than expected.
•Know how to recognize and respond to rip currents.
•Keep children within arm’s reach near the water.
•Swim near staffed lifeguard towers whenever possible.
•Stay off rocks, jetties, and driftwood near the surf zone.

Elevated temperatures and a long-period southerly swell are creating dangerous ocean conditions. A Beach Hazards Statement remains in effect through 9:00 p.m. June 11, with hazardous surf expected through the weekend.
Stay alert, stay informed, and help keep our beaches safe.
