Friday, CAL FIRE CZU, in partnership with the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission , successfully completed a prescribed fire operation on approximately 5 acres of the San Andreas Dam face within the Peninsula Watershed.
Fire behavior and effects occurred as planned, with crews achieving the desired vegetation reduction objectives under favorable conditions.
The removal of overgrown grasses will help improve dam safety by allowing engineers to more effectively inspect the earthen dam for signs of cracking, erosion, slumping, or other potential concerns that can be obscured by dense vegetation.
In addition to meeting project objectives, the operation provided valuable hands-on training opportunities for firefighters and watershed personnel, strengthening firing operations, communication, and multi-agency coordination as we move into peak wildfire season.
A dedicated team of biologists was also on-site throughout the project to identify any sensitive species and ensure appropriate environmental protections and precautions were implemented before and during operations.
Crews remained engaged throughout the day to monitor conditions, secure the burn area, and ensure all objectives were safely met.
We extend our sincere appreciation to all personnel and partner agencies who contributed to the planning and ex*****on of this successful project, including the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission, Bay Area Air Quality Management District, biological resource specialists, and all responding fire and watershed staff. Your professionalism, collaboration, and commitment to public safety and environmental stewardship made this operation a success.
