At 12:41 p.m., CAL FIRE, Santa Cruz County Fire, and local partner agencies responded to a reported vegetation fire near Green Hills Drive and Glen Canyon Road in Scotts Valley.

First arriving resources located a 1/4-acre vegetation fire and launched a aggressive initial attack, successfully stopping the forward rate of spread.

Thank you to our cooperators for the rapid joint response: Scotts Valley Fire Protection District, Santa Cruz Fire Department, Central Fire District, Felton Fire Protection District, and the Scotts Valley Police Department.

Please be advised there is a vegetation fire near Green Hills Road with a slow rate of spread. Crews are on scene now working to put out the fire. If you see or smell smoke in the area this might be the cause.

CAL FIRE CZU Strike Team 9171C is back home! 🚒💨
Our engine companies wrapped up a cover assignment in the CAL FIRE Tuolumne-Calaveras Unit (TCU), where they were deployed.
While covering TCU, ST9171C stayed busy responding to a variety of calls, including medical aids, multiple vegetation fires, and a structure fire. Though our crews were eager and ready to stay as long as needed, we’re glad to have them back home safe and sound in the CZU!

CONDORS BACK IN THE WILD.

Ventana Wildlife Society’s Condor Program was caring for two condors that had completed treatment for lead poisoning and were ready to return to the wild. But with the Timber Fire threatening the sanctuary and roads closed because of firefighting operations, there was no safe way for the birds to leave on their own.

CAL FIRE and the U.S. Forest Service worked with the sanctuary to reach the remote release pen. After nearly two hours traveling through the incident area, they made it to the birds and safely released both condors back into the wild.

Within minutes, the two birds joined a group of wild condors already in the area and began flying east toward the mountains.

Every life matters during a wildfire, including the wildlife caught in its path. We’re grateful to work alongside our partners to help give these endangered condors a safe path back to the wild.

Training for the next generation of fire leaders. 🔥 Battalion Chief Jeremy Ornelas lead the cadre with Captain Matt Spanos of the Glenwood Fire Center is teaching the NWCG S-290 Intermediate Wildland Fire Behavior course to 47 members of CZU hand crew members. This class is giving firefighters the knowledge and skills needed to understand fire behavior, make sound tactical decisions, and operate safely in complex wildland environments.
