Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park inspires calm reflection among ancient giant redwoods and sunny sandhill ridges. Its historical significance and spectacular scenery draw travelers from around the world. Within its 4,650 acres, visitors can enjoy 30 miles of hiking and riding trails, as well as picnicking, swimming, camping, and fishing. Henry Cowell Redwoods SP is home to ancient redwoods, the Sa

n Lorenzo River, a meadow, and the rare Santa Cruz Sandhills. There are 3 separate vehicle entrances to this park. The campground and Santa Cruz Sandhills portion of the park is located at 2591 Graham Hill road. The day-use entrance, where you can find the meadow, river, and old-growth redwoods, is located off Hwy 9 in downtown Felton. The Fall Creek Unit, where you can find a new-growth redwood forest, the river, and historic lime-kilns, is located at 1400 Felton Empire Road.

⚠️Park Update ⚠️

The Fall Creek Unit of Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park will be closing sections of trails along the Fall Creek Truck Trail due to a Forest Health project that is currently underway. The timber fallers started on the Fall Creek Truck Trail (FCTT) Project today and will be falling dead trees of all sizes Mondays-Fridays until April 28.

This end date may be pushed back pending weather conditions. Staff have requested trail closures on the FCTT during these times to ensure public safety.

Please respect all trail closure signs to keep yourself safe.

Fancy squirrels in the park!

You’ll likely see a handful of these cuties when you visit Henry Cowell Redwoods; there are 5 very abundant species residing in the area, 1 of which is a particular Trickster.

The Eastern Gray Squirrel population has a well documented pigment gene mutation that creates a jet-black appearance. In all likelihood, these “fancy squirrels” are a different color morph of the Eastern Gray Squirrels.

🔥🌿 Did you know that controlled burns can benefit the Santa Cruz Mountains ecosystem? Learn more about this important land management practice in episode 4 of The Santa Cruz Sandhills Series! In this video, we'll show you two great examples of different stages of Succession, in the Sandhills after controlled burns. 🎥

Controlled burns can help restore the natural fire cycle, prevent wildfires, and promote plant diversity. This is an important land management practice used by California State Parks in the Sandhills of Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park. The Sandhills ecosystem is one of 4 unique biomes represented within the boundaries of Henry Cowell and is full of endemic and endangered species. The presence of these species only make it that much more crucial to protect this unique section of the Santa Cruz Mountains. Our hope is that with this series, you'll gain a better understanding of this beautiful habitat and learn how to preserve what's in your backyard.
