CTFD was able to complete a winter project of an additional Polaris Ranger acquired through the Federal Excess Property Program (FEPP). This unit had low miles and hours but had been exposed to the elements. We handled most of the restoration in-house, repainting much of it, re-doing plastics, and outfitting it with Wildfire equipment. Because this unit was essentially free (lifetime lease) and we utilized some surplus equipment, we have less than $2,000 invested in what should be a great Wildfire unit. These Polaris Rangers are proving to be safer and more agile in the woods than our Jeeps, thanks to their modern EFI engines, disc brakes, and automatic transmissions.
With Wildfire season right around the corner, we’re glad to have all eight Wildfire units ready to go.

This morning concluded our Ice Rescue training, conducted in collaboration with the Ganges Township Fire Department. Annually, our department engages in this type of rescue scenario training. Fortunately, Clyde Township Fire Department has not encountered any Ice Rescue incidents in recent years. Ensuring our equipment is in optimal working condition and our personnel are proficient in its use is a yearly practice. Currently, ice on bodies of water is at a precarious stage. If you plan to venture onto the ice, please exercise extreme caution. We appreciate the invitation from our neighbors Ganges Township Fire Department and look forward to future collaborations.

Our February training session featured the annual Extrication Master Skills relay, which focused on the efficient ex*****on of unconventional tasks using rescue tools while incorporating radio communication for instructional purposes. Five stations were designed for two teams, each consisting of five members. Utilizing jaws or spreaders to complete tasks upon receiving instructions from their commanding officer via radio transmission was a critical aspect. The restriction on hand use added complexity. The team that completed all tasks first emerged victorious. Congratulations to Team 1 on their achievement. We are fortunate to have a set of rescue tools available at each station. Each tool weighs approximately 50lbs. The jaws could (not recommended) cut a steering wheel post in half. A battery-operated tool option is available for smaller incidents. CTFD performs extrication on average 6 incidents every year.

It is with great sadness that the Hamilton Fire Department announces the death of Chief David Haverdink, age 74. On December 23, 2025, at 1801 hours, Chief Haverdink was struck by a vehicle while operating at a medical incident on M40 in Heath Township, Michigan. Chief Haverdink was transported from the scene to the University of Michigan Health West in Wyoming, Michigan, in critical condition. He was admitted to the hospital and ultimately succumbed to his injuries on December 25, 2025.

Chief Haverdink is a 51-year veteran of the Hamilton Fire Department, with over 40 of those years serving as the Fire Chief. Additionally, he served 8 years as the Sheriff of Allegan County, Michigan.

Chief Haverdink is widely respected throughout all of West Michigan, serving on numerous boards and organizations, and providing outstanding service to citizens throughout the Hamilton Fire Department’s coverage area.

Clyde Township Fire Department Recognition:
The Clyde Township Fire Department would like to formally recognize Firefighter Leon Lubbers for his courageous and life-saving actions on Lake Allegan.
At approximately 12:00 PM on Tuesday, September 23rd, Clyde Fire was dispatched to Lake Allegan for a report of a male subject who had fallen out of a kayak while hunting. Dispatch reported the man was in an unknown location on the lake and in distress.
Firefighter Lubbers, who happened to be at his wife's family home on Lake Allegan at the time ran down near the dock , heard the victim’s cries for help across the water. Without hesitation, and with the assistance of his father-in-law Ken Yonker, Firefighter Lubbers quickly launched their pontoon boat from the shore station.
Upon reaching the individual, they found him treading water in full hunting gear and without a life jacket, clearly exhausted and struggling to stay afloat. Firefighter Lubbers was able to safely pull the man onto the pontoon boat, effectively preventing what could have been a tragic outcome.
Thanks to Firefighter Lubbers' swift response, situational awareness, and bravery, a life was saved. His actions exemplify the dedication and selflessness that define the fire service, and we are proud to have him as a member of our department.
Thank you, Firefighter Lubbers and Ken Yonker, for your heroism and service to the community.
