Completed on December 29, 1858 and first lit on August 1, 1859, the Fenwick Island Lighthouse filled the dangerous sixty-mile, dark stretch of coastline between the squat [soon to be replaced] 1833 Assateague Beacon, and Cape Henlopen Lighthouse to the north. A ten-acre tract was bought from Mary C. The original 1859 keepers quarters sits on a brick cellar which housed a 2,500-gallon cistern for c

ollecting rain water from the roof. A second assistant keepers quarters was constructed in 1881. The Fenwick Island Lighthouse stands 87 feet high, is equipped with a third-order Fresnel Lens which can be seen fifteen nautical miles out to sea. Interestingly the lighthouse' first coat of white paint cost the U.S. Government $5.
