The month of August is over, and so is our tour through the region on Where We Work Wednesday. Today, we’re in Santa Claus, located in Spencer County.
When the town was established, it was originally named Santa Fe, however another town in Indiana already bore that name. Through several local meetings it was decided to change the name to Santa Claus.
Santa Claus is home to Holiday World and Splashin’ Safari, Santa’s Candy Castle, Santa Claus Museum and Village, and the Santa Claus Christmas store which all draw lots of visitors to the small town during the summer months.
Former NFL quarterback Jay Cutler calls Santa Claus his hometown.
Indiana 15 has worked with the town of improvements to the water system, a Parks and Recreation Master Plan, Zoning Maps, updates to the codebook, and trail enhancements.

Welcome back to our Where We Work Wednesday tour through the region. With only one more week left in our tour, we’re stopping today in Spencer County. The county was named for Speir Spencer who fought and was killed in the Battle of Tippecanoe.
Spencer County is home to Saint Meinrad Archabbey, one of only 2 archabbeys in the US, and 1 of 11 in the world. The county is also the boyhood home of Abraham Lincoln who spent his formative years of 7-21 here.
Former NFL tight end Ken Dilger who played with the Indianapolis Colts and won a Super Bowl championship while playing with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers hails from Mariah Hill, and longtime NFL and college football coach Howard Schnellenberger was born in St. Meinrad.
Indiana 15 has worked with the county on Community Crossings applications, clearance of the former jail, historic preservation of the courthouse rotunda, and the construction of a new water tower and supporting water lines for St. Meinrad Water.

Only 3 stops remain on Where We Work Wednesday tour through the region. Today we’re in Dubois County. The county was named for Toussaint Dubois who fought in the Revolutionary War, the Battle of Tippecanoe and the War of 1812. The county seat was once in Portersville but moved to its current location in Jasper in 1830.
Indiana 15 has worked with the county on their recent HELP program which saw funding for an Owner Occupied Rehabilitation program and TRI-CAP Head Start, an internet hot spot grant program through a partnership with SIRS, Parks and Recreation Master plan, improvements to the Dubois County Park, improvements to the Dubois stormwater systems, and construction of the Dubois Library.

Congratulations to the City of Cannelton for receiving $750,000 in grant funding from the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs for improvements to the water utility system. This grant will include water storage tank improvements, rehabilitation of existing water wells and upgrade the water monitoring and control system.

We’re down to the last four stops on our Where We Work Wednesday tour through the region. Today we’re in Milltown. Milltown is a unique community as it is located in both Crawford and Harrison Counties.
Milltown sees a large influx of visitors in the spring and summer months due to their location along the Blue River. Kayakers and canoers paddle through the area enjoying the scenery along the banks of the river.
The town’s appointment to the Indiana 15 board, Bill Byrd, is the longest serving representative to the commission. Thanks to Bill for his many years of service!
Indiana 15 has worked with the town on updating the codebook, comprehensive, wastewater plans, as well as updates to the wastewater and systems.

The month of July is almost over, but we still have one more Where We Work Wednesday to squeeze in. Today’s stop takes us to Dale, located in northern Spencer County.
The Town of Dale was originally called Elizabeth after Elizabeth Wood Jones who was the mother of the first non-Native American child born in what is now Carter Township. The town was later renamed Dale in honor of Robert Dale Owen, the congressman representing the town.
Dale is the birthplace of J. Clarence Karcher, the inventor of the reflection seismograph; Florence Henderson, Carol Brady on the Brady Bunch; Del Harris, a former NBA coach; and Roger Kaiser an All-American basketball player and former coach.
Indiana 15 has worked with the town on updating the town’s codebook, broadband, comprehensive, and water and wastewater plans, as well as updates to the wastewater and stormwater systems.

The days keep flying by, and it’s Where We Work Wednesday again. Today we’re in Leavenworth, located along the Ohio River in Crawford County.
Leavenworth was named for Zebulon and Seth Leavenworth, founders of the town. Following the 1937 flood, the town was moved from its location along the river to higher ground. With help from the Works Progress Administration, residents rebuilt the town in its current location.
Indiana 15 has worked with the town on updates to the water and stormwater systems, updating the town’s codebook, comprehensive and stormwater plans, and acquisition of a new firetruck.

We blinked and another week has gone by, and it’s Where We Work Wednesday again. Our tour through the region has us stopping off in Birdseye today, located in southeastern Dubois County.
Birdseye is said to be named for a spot Reverend “Bird” Johnson said, “suited Bird’s eye.” Just like our stop last week, Birdseye is the smallest incorporated community in Dubois County.
Indiana 15 has worked with the town of Birdseye on updates to their code book, construction of the new fire station, clearance of the old school-which provided the location for the fire station, updates to the town’s water system, and the current wastewater project.
