People have asked me why I'm running, and the answer is actually pretty simple:
If you ask my friends, employees, family and community members they'll tell you that I've always been the kind of person who sees a need and tries to fill it.
I've survived a lot in my life. I've survived abuse. I've survived financial insecurities. I've navigated a healthcare system that can be exhausting and expensive. I've fought insurance companies over care and medications my doctors say I need. I've experienced profound losses that changed me forever. And I've faced criticism for standing up for vulnerable young people when it would have been easier to stay quiet. The list is long... but I'm still standing strong.
What all of those experiences taught me is that I'm pretty hard to break. But there are so many that feel broken every day and there are a lot of people who feel like nobody is listening to them.
I don't claim to be an expert on every issue. In fact, one of the things I'm most excited about is getting out across District 9, meeting people, hearing their stories, and learning about the challenges they face every day. Farmers, teachers, healthcare workers, small-business owners, parents, veterans, retirees; I want to hear from all of them.
I run a small business. I founded a nonprofit. I spent 5 years on the Human Rights Commission. I've spent years working with people from all walks of life, and one thing I've learned is that most people want the same things: to be seen and heard, to be valued, to be treated fairly, and to have the opportunity to build a good life.
I'm running because I care deeply about people. Some might say too deeply. I believe government should work for everyday Minnesotans, not just those with the loudest voices or the deepest pockets. I believe bringing compassion and empathy into politics isn't a weakness.
My decision to do this makes MN history in that every House and Senate seat has a Democratic candidate for the first time in history. I am the 201st to step in...because when I see a need, I have a hard time walking away from it.
District 9 deserves someone who will show up, listen, and do the work. I hope to be that person.
