🚌 BACK TO SCHOOL = SCHOOL BUS SAFETY! 🚌

Just a great reminder as we head into Back to School Week:

🚨 STOP for school buses when the red lights are flashing!
👀 Watch carefully for children getting on and off the bus.
🐢 Slow down in school zones and residential areas.
📵 Stay focused and put the distractions away.
🚌 Give school buses plenty of space and time to stop.

Let’s work together to keep our students, bus drivers, and everyone on the road safe this school year!

Have a great—and safe—school year! 🎒📚

“ASK A TROOPER” by Sgt. Jesse Grabow of the Minnesota State Patrol

Question: I see a lot of people not wearing their seat belt correctly. Several of them, have the shoulder belt worn underneath the shoulder/arm. Can you provide some education on this?

Answer: Seat belt use is required with a properly adjusted and fastened seat belt, including both the shoulder and lap belt when the vehicle is so equipped. You are more likely to survive a car crash if you use both the lap and shoulder belts together.

• Lap belt: Adjust the lap belt to fit snugly across your hipbones or upper thighs. It should never be positioned across your abdomen or the soft part of your stomach.
• Shoulder belt: Adjust the shoulder belt to fit snugly across your chest and the middle of your shoulder. When positioned correctly, the seat belt is much less likely to cause injuries in the event of a crash.

A portion of state statutes were used with permission from the Office of the Revisor of Statutes. If you have any questions concerning traffic related laws or issues in Minnesota, send your questions to Trp. Jesse Grabow – Minnesota State Patrol at 1000 Highway 10 West, Detroit Lakes, MN 56501-2205. (You can follow him on “X” or reach him at, [email protected]).

🚲🛴 E-Bikes & Scooters: Back-to-School Reminder

As we get closer to the start of another school year, we want to provide a quick reminder about the rules and safety expectations for e-bikes and electric scooters.

Please take a few minutes to review the rules and make sure your child understands them before heading out to school.

Keep these rules in mind:
• Follow all traffic laws and obey traffic signs and signals.
• Ride as far to the right as practicable when traveling on the roadway.
• Use designated bike paths and trails where permitted.
• Riders under 18 must wear a properly fitted, approved helmet when operating a motorized foot scooter.
• Children under 12 may not operate a motorized foot scooter.
• Be aware of pedestrians and other students—slow down and give them plenty of space.
• Never carry passengers unless specifically permitted by law.
• Be especially careful around school entrances, crosswalks, buses, and areas with heavy pedestrian traffic.

Minnesota law treats e-bikes and motorized scooters differently, so knowing what you are riding and the rules that apply to it is important.

Most importantly, slow down, pay attention, and make safety a priority.

Let's have a safe start to the school year! 🏫🚲🛴

A trooper was assisting at a crash and had moved the family to his squad. The trooper's squad was then hit from the rear, pushing him into the car in front. Does anyone know what year this was? We believe it was on the on-ramp to I-94 a few years back. None of the retired troopers we asked have the details on it.
