It is with great sadness that the Cape Girardeau Police Department announces the passing of K9 Yuki. Yuki faithfully served our department since beginning his tour of duty on January 27, 2020.

On January 29, 2025, K9 Yuki underwent emergency surgery due to a complete urethral blockage caused by bladder stones. While recovering, he experienced complications and was rushed back to LaCroix Animal Hospital on January 31. Despite the best efforts of veterinary staff, K9 Yuki continued to decline. A second emergency surgery was performed, but sadly, Yuki passed shortly after.

Yuki was a highly trained dual-purpose German Shepherd, specializing in tracking, suspect apprehension, and narcotics detection. His work was instrumental in removing dangerous drugs from the streets and homes of Cape Girardeau, making our community safer.

Please keep Patrolman Droddy in your thoughts and prayers. Yuki was more than just a K9 officer, he was Patrolman Droddy’s loyal partner and fierce protector for five years. Their bond was extraordinary, and Yuki’s loss is deeply felt by our department and community.

Rest in peace, K9 Yuki. You served with honor, and you will never be forgotten.

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of retired K9 Merica. Merica became very ill and passed away last Tuesday. He was surrounded by his handler Josh and loved ones. Merica proudly served the citizens of Ferguson for 9 years with distinction and retired in March of 2023. Please keep Josh and his family in your prayers as they learn to cope with this loss.

Merica, run free buddy for you’ve done your job well.

GET READY, FERGUSON!

National Night Out (NNO) is a yearly nationwide initiative that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make neighborhoods safer. NNO is held on the first Tuesday in October from 6 to 9 p.m. (October 1, 2024).

The best way to build a safer community is to get to know your neighbors; police encourage interaction as a crime prevention tool.
Neighbors that get to know each other are more likely to watch out for each other and report suspicious activities.

Chief Troy Doyle and your Ferguson Police Department are looking forward to visiting NNO activities in Ferguson so give us a shout and let us know what your neighborhood is planning! Please use the link below to give us details about your event.

We will do our best to have representation during the night. We know we will not make every event, but your participation does make a difference. Have fun and we hope to see you at NNO 2024. Thank you!

🚨Important Update from the Ferguson Police Department🚨

As of today, we’ve had 86 vehicles fail to stop for our officers this year alone. With the new “Valentine’s Law” going into effect on August 28th, it’s crucial that everyone understands the severe consequences of fleeing from law enforcement.

Under this new law, fleeing from a traffic stop can result in serious penalties:

• Class D Felony: If your actions create a substantial risk of injury, you will face a minimum of 1 year in prison without the possibility of probation or parole.
• Class B Felony: If your flight causes physical injury to another person, you could be sentenced to 5 to 15 years in prison.
• Class A Felony: If your actions result in someone’s death, you could be facing 10 to 30 years or even life imprisonment.

It’s important to note that even if you believe the traffic stop is unlawful, this is not a defense under Valentine’s Law. The law is clear: once an officer initiates a stop, fleeing is not an option. This law is designed to protect both the public and law enforcement officers by ensuring that fleeing a stop carries significant consequences.

We want our community to be fully aware of these new penalties. If you’re pulled over, please stop and comply. The risks of fleeing far outweigh any momentary gain.

We’re committed to keeping Ferguson safe and informed. Let’s work together to protect our community.
