Whippoorwill Academy and Village We are open every 3rd Saturday from 1-5:00- April -October.

Whippoorwill Academy and Village is a place to learn about local history, to enjoy the arts as well this beautiful setting with the Appalachian mountains in the distance. Family Farm features historical museums, including: Tom Dooley Museum, Daniel Boone Replica Cabin, Smokehouse Art Gallery, Matt's Store,Jail, School House, Chapel, Tavern, Blacksmith shop, Weaving room and more.

We look forward to seeing guests tomorrow, Oct. 17th for our last day this season for tours that go from 1-5:00. There will be activities for children. Come and have fun! Admission is $10.00 per person and free for children under the age of 5. Parking is free. The country store and the bookstore will be open. Paintings of national parks is on display in the Smokehouse Gallery by artist, JoAnn Pippin. Bring a picnic and enjoy these beautiful surroundings and cabins!

Today we had a great time with 72 Dudley Shoals Elementary School 2nd graders at the Village. They learned about Daniel Boone; shelling corn; grinding corn (we want that cornbread); hunting for an animal that Daniel Boone would have hunted; bartering; early education in a one-room school' music time; making puppets; feeding goats; and visiting the Smokehouse Gallery to see JoAnn Pippin's paintings of National Parks. Thanks to the wonderful teachers who planned this field trip and to the parents and grandparents who were also present for the fun. Field trips are one of the most memorable school experiences that students can enjoy.
A special thanks to our volunteers: Christy Arney, Sharon Carter Underwood, Diana Hale, Anna Bottoms and Dick Martine. Many thanks to those who helped the week prior in painting animal rocks and bagging prizes for kids who didn't have money to spend: Shannon and Skip Davis, Bridget Morris, Diana Hale, and Anna Bottoms. It takes lots of willing hands and hearts to keep this village going!

Thank goodness for volunteers who are helping us get ready for upcoming elementary school field trips. We have an activity that goes along with our lesson on Daniel Boone that the children look for a rock that has an animal painted on it that represents an animal that Boone would have hunted. We then take the rock to the bartering table and learn the art of trading. They will also have music, art and games. We love educating our children about history and even more...We also have a country store where we attempt to teach the children about what they can purchase with the money they brought. For children who have no money to spend, we have small bags of toys to give them. No child will leave empty handed (a practice begun by the village founder, the late Edith Carter that we continue today). Thank you to our volunteers: Skip and Shannon Davis, Anna Bottoms, Bridgett Morris and Diana Hale.
